Actually, Obama's writing was on the 1996 document, which was filed when Obama was running for the Illinois state Senate. A Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois, had this question, and Obama took hard line:
35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.
Q: You said recently, "I have no intention of taking away folks' guns." But you support the D.C. handgun ban, and you've said that it's constitutional. How do you reconcile those two positions?
A: Because I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country. I think it's important for us to recognize that we've got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. ... We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respect the Second Amendment and people's traditions.

it will cost him the election.
Obama doesn’t care about guns. He’s a politician of the worst kind. He wants power. If he has to support gun control in the primaries, no problem. If he has to support gun rights in the general, no problem. Same thing he did with NAFTA and FISA. Get to power first, then do what you please. He’ll be worse than Clenis ever was. Clenis didn’t hang out with William Ayers.
Obama does believe in gun control and will implement it, if he gets elected.
Obama linked to gun control efforts

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has worked to assure uneasy gun owners that he believes the Constitution protects their rights and that he doesn’t want to take away their guns.
But before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.
The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners’ rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans. And it paid to support a book called “Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.”
Obama Record May Be Gold Mine For Critics
Eight Years As State Senator Were Full Of Controversial Votes, Including Abortion And Gun Control

Jan. 17, 2007
He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. He supported allowing retired police officers to carry concealed weapons, but opposed allowing people to use banned handguns to defend against intruders in their homes. And the list of sensitive topics goes on.
With only a slim, two-year record in the U.S. Senate, Obama doesn’t have many controversial congressional votes which political opponents can frame into attack ads. But his eight years as an Illinois state senator are sprinkled with potentially explosive land mines, such as his abortion and gun control votes.
He had a 100 percent rating from the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council for his support of abortion rights, family planning services and health insurance coverage for female contraceptives.
Obama regularly supported gun-control measures, including a ban on semiautomatic “assault weapons” and a limit on handgun purchases to one a month.
He also opposed letting people use a self-defense argument if charged with violating local handgun bans by using weapons in their homes. The bill was a reaction to a Chicago-area man who, after shooting an intruder, was charged with a handgun violation.
More left wing double talk.
What a loser....

Obama’s Draconian Gun Control
March 4, 2008

“I’ll give the mainstream media this: They’re consistent. They’re consistently ignoring Barack Obama’s statements that he “supports” the Second Amendment, and they’re also consistently ignoring Senator Obama’s repeated calls for the kind of gun control that would spell the end of the Second Amendment as we know it.
Back in 1999, Obama called for a laundry list of gun control, including a 500 percent increase in taxes on firearms and ammunition. He called for bans of affordable handguns. He called for mandated “smart gun” technology. He demanded that FFLs not be allowed to maintain their business within five miles of a school or a park. In short, he wanted to regulate the Second Amendment out of existence.
To my knowledge, not one reporter has asked Obama about the positions he took back then. Nor have they asked him about the position he’s taking now, “supporting” the Second Amendment in speeches while refusing to sign on to the congressional amicus brief opposing the District of Columbia’s gun ban. Fifty-five of his fellow senators signed on to that brief, but Obama still pretends the issue is about “local control,” not constitutional rights.
When the mainstream media refuses to ask a presidential frontrunner about his position on an issue, you can’t help but wonder why. When the issue is the Second Amendment, it can’t be because the press doesn’t like what Obama has to say. Maybe it’s just that they don’t want you to hear it. “
law abiding people all over the u.s. feel threatened.
i live in an affluent valley but few feel safe out at night.
an example: a friend went to the local valero to gas up one evening,
got out of his car, and then discovered that he was in the middle of two
mexican gangs, guns pointed at each other.
he went into the station where other customers waited. someone had called the police.
the police arrived and the mexican gang members ran into the night.
now, does obama really think americans are going to give up their legal guns?
The Global Poverty Act (Global Welfare Program) that he sponsored in the senate calls for a ban on small arms weapons.
I believe that exposes his position on gun control more than anything else.
All of Obama’s claims and statements come with expiration dates. What he says at the moment means absolutely nothing.

Naaa... Most voters have the memory of a fruit fly.
I think that makes him a centrist. /s
Obama would say he believes the moon is made of green cheese if it would get him a few votes; however, the record clearly shows that he’s militantly anti-second amendment.
I think publicizing this vote is key to winning the election. As far as I'm concerned, if a thief breaks into your house, you have a right to blow his head off.
Boy, I thought I was confused.
And to think that this fool is a Harvard law graduate. Gee. What a waste of tuition money!
And to think that this fool is a Harvard law graduate...but it appears that Harvard tends to Graduate a lot of fools and should be decertified as a bonafide Center of Learning...after which their ignormous (sic) trust fund should be confiscated to pay retribution to the taxpayers that have born the brunt of the results to society by their ileducation of citizens.
screw you, o’bama
Man's strongest instinct is "self preservation"...extenuating circumstances excepted.
Tradition goes to "shooting contests", etc..
