More than a third of Danes have used cannabis at least once in their lives, making them the top users of the drug in Europe. The new statistics from the European Centre for Monitoring of Drugs and Drug Addiction show that Denmark comes out ahead of France and the UK for use of the illicit drug.
Of Danish adults 36.5 percent have tried it at least once in their lives, compared to 30.6 percent in France and 29.8 percent in the United Kingdom.
However, Denmark only lies in seventh place for the use of cannabis in the last year, which suggests that the Danish adults who have tried the drug are not regular users.
The study clearly shows the popularity of cannabis among the younger population, with a whopping 49.5 percent of young adults aged 15 to 34 having taken cannabis in the past.
The drug is one of the most popular in Europe, with the EU drug agency reporting that over 13 million Europeans have tried it in the last month. Nearly 50,000 tonnes of cannabis herb and resin are produced globally to feed that appetite every year.
Experts think that Denmark's problem with cannabis stems from the acceptability of the drug.
'Cannabis is not legally acceptable in Denmark, but it is socially acceptable. Christiania is on the same level as the Little Mermaid in terms of tourist attraction, and maybe it is part of the Danish identity. Some people could get the impression that using cannabis is completely okay, because we have a place where it is sold,' drug abuse advisor Nikolaj Poulsen told B.T. newspaper. (kr)

John Walters and the drug Jihadis will not be pleased.
