MAHONEY: HONORING SOVIET VETERANS?
Palm Beach Post ^ | June 30, 2008 | Larry Lipman

Republicans are having a field day over a flier sent out by U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney that shows an elderly gentleman bedecked with what appear to be Soviet medals.

The picture is on the cover of a Mahoney flier labeled: “Honoring Those Who Defend Our Freedom.” The flier touts Mahoney’s record on veterans’ issues.

“Is Tim Mahoney’s commitment to our veterans so shallow and superficial that he can’t even tell the difference between an American veteran and one who fought for Communism in Joseph Stalin’s Red Army?? said Ken Spain, press secretary for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Maybe it’s that crazy uncle of Obama’s who liberated Auschwitz.

And singlehandedly, in two feet of snow, barefoot, and every place in Auschwitz is uphill.

Nail this guy and NAIL HIM HARD.

That is a GOP district. It is the one Mark Foley squandered.

A good GOP candidate should be able to boot him. He is voting with the Dems on a very high percentage of votes and can thus be tied to Pelosi.

This is a WINNABLE SEAT.

Moreover, the documentary, titled “The War of the World: A New History of the 20th Century,” asserts that the war could only be won by forming an unholy alliance with a dictator - Joseph Stalin,

Certainly, things would have been much different in Europe and North Africa without Stalin's help

who was as brutal as the one they were fighting, Adolf Hitler

Sounds accurate enough

- and by adopting the same “pitiless” and “remorseless” tactics practiced by the enemy.

Certainly true on the Eastern Front. On the western front, the comment could be questioned, although the British bombing campaign would run afoul of modern conventions.

They sure as hell didn’t “liberate” Poland, or any other Eastern European country.

They liberated a lot of watches, liquor, women...

Not that any of these actually wanted to be liberated in the Soviet manner....

While I wouldnt want to honor the Red Army, most of those men were fighting for Mother Russia, not Joe Stalin. The Russians have historically been Hell for any invader, especially the winter, in spite of the generally poor quality of the doctrine, and their generals. If only on the basis of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend, they were our allies.

My Uncle got a nice little swim in the Greenland Sea (Latitude 71 degrees 05 minutes North, Longitude 13 degrees twenty minutes West), 4 November 1942, trying to guard the supplies being taken to Murmansk, Russia. He was a Naval Armed Guard on the "SS William Clark". (0f Lewis and Clark) he was lucky though, he *only* lost a couple of toes to frostbite, not even enough to get him discharged after his recovery instead they sent him to Flight Preparatory School at DePauw University. I don't think he ever became a flier, so he may have washed out and been sent to machinist school instead, since that is what he became, eventually.

True. But could you imagine a politician in Russia using the picture of an American veteran to say that he supports the Russian troops?!?
