I have to agree with you on possibly being another malicious prosecution, the shotgun does change things.

The Marine Corps has in fact a very fine Benelli Semi-Auto 12 ga. shotgun.....built to Marine Corps “specs”.
It is issued for “close work”...
Shotguns are VERY effective in certain scenarios, and are valued and sought after by those “in the know”.
Civilians can purchase a very similar model from Benelli..

First and foremost ...Sgt. Winnick is alive cause he trusted no-freaking-civilians....
unlike this Marine sniper team on the right
or this combined (2 teams) sniper team

A prayer for the Winnick family:
"O Source of Mercy, give us the grace to show forbearance to those who offend against us. When the wrongs and injustices of others wound us, may our hearts not despair of human good. May no trial, however severe, embitter our souls and destroy our trust. When beset by trouble and sorrow, our mothers and fathers put on the armour of faith and fortitude. May we too find strength to meet adversity with quiet courage and unshaken will."

Background info. from Military Times,
Marine Sgt. John Winnick II: Sniper charged in deaths of Iraqi civilians
The charges allege Winnick killed the civilians on June 17, 2007, during combat operations near Lake Tharthar in Anbar, Iraq.
The charges also allege he fired at two others without first identifying whether any of the civilians posed a threat, Myers said.
Another Rules of Engagement situation, during combat, where family members have to spend the big bucks to defend their son's honor while looking at (in this case) 40 years, plus a dishnorable discharge.

I was able to confirm that Mark Walker is there for today’s hearing. It started at eight Pacific so it’s well underway by now. Might be something on the NC Times site after the lunch break.

Let us hope this Marine’s heart was in the right place and that the good Lord shall provide the way for him to be vindicated from these charges.

When a fine, honorable and experienced Marine like Cpl Winnick has to face charges like this, it makes me wonder what’s happened to our USMC. Helluva recruiting tool. I pray for him, his family and his legal team.
