Archbishop: Honoring Canadian Abortionist is Debased

"No person may presume to judge the soul of Henry Morgentaler," wrote Archbishop Collins, "but it cannot be denied that the effect of his life's work has been a deadly assault upon the most helpless among us."

He said that with this appointment, Canada honors "a medical man who has brought not healing, but the destruction of the defenseless and immeasurable grief. This award must not stand."

Archbishop Collins asked all people of good will to protest of "this act of dishonor," and "ask that this action be revoked."

He announced that Sunday in his archdiocese will be a special day to pray for an end to abortion.

He has asked that this prayer be said at all Masses:

"That the scourge of abortion be lifted from our land, that those who promote it may be brought to a change of heart, that all who are tempted to abortion may be lovingly helped to protect the precious gift of life, and that all who have experienced an abortion may be comforted with the healing gift of love."

How are these folks selected? Does the ruling coalition grant these recognitions?

I’m actually less surprised by the award than by the fact that one of the bishops had the cajones to condemn it. I would have more likely expected the bishops to have a mass in his honor.

The head of the awards committee is Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, an appointee of former PM Crétien (Liberal). She apparently abandoned the tradition of consensus in selecting recipients for such awards, and pushed the approval through a divided committee.

The result is that no one has any reason to regard the Order of Canada as meaning much any more.

Well, technically she is appointed by the Queen, but she was nominated by Crétien.

Such an “honor” by a supposedly civilized country is a very grim development, but looking at the bright side, there is humor in the fact that this Beverley McLachlin once gave a decision in which she considered “person’ to include both real and imaginary: “I conclude that “person” in s. 163.1(1)(a) includes both actual and imaginary human beings.” (Supreme Court of Canada, R. v. Sharpe, Paragraph 38)

Apparently, though, an unborn child is just too much for her to imagine.

Watch for next Commencement season, Morgentaler can pick up some honorary degrees from Boston College, Wheeling Jesuit University, Scranton University, Loyola Marymount University—all the Jesuit colleges.

He can come to Washington—Archbishop Wuerl would be happy to give him some kind of award. Can’t give him Communion, unfortunately, since Morgentaler is Jewish.

Come on, everybody knows that anti-choice lunatics are just a bunch of bug-eyed hicks dedicated to indiscriminate bombing of reproductive health facilities.

Or was that just something that Satan whispered in my ear?

I am sure that in the next few weeks several winners will return their awards in protest.
