WALL•E world (Pixar director mentions Christ As motivation for film)
World Magazine ^ | 6/28/08 | Megan Basham

Filmmaker Andrew Stanton says his latest film isn't about the environment or obesity. It's about relationships...[said Stanton] what really interested me was the idea of the most human thing in the universe being a machine because it has more interest in finding out what the point of living is than actual people. The greatest commandment Christ gives us is to love, but that's not always our priority. So I came up with this premise that could demonstrate what I was trying to say—that irrational love defeats the world's programming. You've got these two robots that are trying to go above their basest directives, literally their programming, to experience love.

With the human characters I wanted to show that our programming is the routines and habits that distract us to the point that we're not really making connections to the people next to us. We're not engaging in relationships, which are the point of living—relationship with God and relationship with other people.

Good film, and I liked it before I read this article.

One of the most moving films I've seen in a long time.

A MUST see. Pixar nailed it.

STANTON: Well, what really interested me was the idea of the most human thing in the universe being a machine because it has more interest in finding out what the point of living is than actual people. The greatest commandment Christ gives us is to love, but that's not always our priority. So I came up with this premise that could demonstrate what I was trying to say—that irrational love defeats the world's programming. You've got these two robots that are trying to go above their basest directives, literally their programming, to experience love. Saw it a couple of hours ago, before reading this.

Think he's caught in the very deficient English definition of "love" (the Greeks are far better here), but there's more than "basic programming" involved -- all three (one a late entry) robots are able to "learn," and that is part of the story. Driven home with a sledgehammer shortly before the end.

We have 5 grandchildren from 5 to 12, and when my wife and I took them to see this, they seemed a little confused by it all. My wife and I loved it, but the kids were middling in their appraisal.

Yea, saw this movie with my grandchildren (3 and 5) they liked it and played Wall E and Eva for a couple of days but over all I was shock at how the movie stressed the green propaganda and people are bad, fat and lazy.

Was Christ an inspiration, or was it Johnny Number 5?

But not inherently. The message was mixed in this regard.

God bless Andrew Stanton for having the
courage to “out” himself as a true believer
- a man of faith in Jesus Christ.

So I came up with this premise that could demonstrate what I was trying to say—that irrational love defeats the world's programming.

Irrational--precisely. A love that surpasses the secular world's understanding. And with that, we're off to what looks to be a very great Fourth of July vacation.

May you have a blessed Independence Day!

How about reading the filmmaker’s ideas expressed in the article? You’ll come away knowing his intent was really about dependence on government and that attitude destroys the human soul.

I took my son last week, and I was pleasantly surprised. I was waiting for the enviro-guilt to start and it never did- since the focus was indeed on sacrificial love vs. our tendencies toward selfishness. Great movie, Pixar has a winner.
