CNN poll: Most say Founding Fathers wouldn't be impressed

CNN) -- How would the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin feel about the way the United States has turned out 232 years after declaring its independence?

Most Americans say they're proud to be citizens, but most also think the Founding Fathers wouldn't be pleased.

Not pleased, a majority of Americans recently polled said.

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey, 69 percent of adult Americans who responded to a poll June 26-29 said the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be disappointed by the way the nation has turned out overall.

Twenty-nine percent responded "pleased," the only other choice given to the 1,026 respondents of the telephone poll.

Americans "didn't always feel that way," according to Keating Holland, CNN polling director. "In 2001, 54 percent thought that the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be pleased with the state of the country today."

Still, most who responded to last month's poll took great pride in their country.

Sixty-one percent said they were extremely proud to be Americans; another 28 percent said they were very proud. Seven percent answered "moderately," 2 percent said "only a little," and 1 percent answered "not at all."

Probably they would be shocked by the size of the Federal Govt, the level of taxation and regulation imposed on the citizens and the activist judges making law from the bench
and moving away from the tenets of the US Constitution.

Americans “didn’t always feel that way,” according to Keating Holland, CNN polling director. “In 2001, 54 percent thought that the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be pleased with the state of the country today.”

First off, CNN Propaganda Director would be a more apt job title.

Since he is making a comparison with supposedly similar polling done in 2001, this is yet another unimaginative, transparent slam at the alleged downward spiral caused by the Bush Administration.

I am solidly conservative, and I do not think the Founders would be happy with the America of 2008, but it is ENTIRELY due to the socialism, perversion, racism and class warfare advocated by the Democrats and their LeftMedia.

"2 percent said "only a little," and 1 percent answered "not at all.""

Gosh, and to think that until just a few weeks ago Barack Obama was in that 2 per cent..... and Michelle Obama was in the 1 per cent of "not at all"!!!

How far the Obamas have come in the course of one political campaign.

The founding fathers would be amazed at what has been accomplished in the physical world, transportation, production, increased comforts etc. but I believe they would be sick to death at the sight of what we have become morally. They probably would weep thinking they gave all they had to create a free nation and have us throw away the greatest blessing of all. I am certain they would shake their heads in amazement at what passes for logical thinking these days.

I’m sure they’d kick our @$$e$ over letting liberals and their bizarre economic religion come to dominate our national culture. And they would be entitled to do so.

A majority of Americans have no idea what the Founders were all about. Nor do they understand what is written in the Declaration of Independence or the US Constitution.

how many polled can even name a founding father?

The average citizen in America knows the American Idol contestants better than any historical figure from our founding, and any CNN propaganda piece only reflects that fact.

I despise the MSM more every day.

The Founders’ would be most appalled by a Congress that allows a tyrannical judiciary to run amok and unchecked.

Every now and then, something comes along that indicates the people are not as politically dumb as many claim. This is one of those times. You betcha, the Framers would be all-fired angry about where the country is headed.

That's also why I've decided to do a live, conversation as James Madison, next June (if not sooner). Click below for more.

Interesting point you make. In the script I'm working on, Gen Franklin's reactions to our modern technology will be a major point. See below:

The Founders would be shocked at the degree to which the courts have eroded the provisions of their Constitution and its protections.

The one underlying foundation stone of the American experiment is capsulized in the words of Thomas Jefferson:

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."

All of the "Blessings of Liberty" are secure only as long as our nation's laws are based on that simple truth. According to the Founders, life and liberty are Creator-endowed and, therefore, inalienable (cannot be disjoined). That foundation stone of our liberty has been eroded by an arrogant human idea which ignores the Creator's role and places at risk all the other liberties, rights, and "blessings." No one class of individuals possesses a right to "choose" to deny what the Creator has endowed.

The future of America rests on the role the Supreme Court will play in restoring the Founders' understanding of life and liberty.

Thomas Jefferson: Who the hell is this Lincoln guy and who did you say he freed?

Well sir...I can tell you, he wasn't a Democrat nor an "elitist" seeking favor with threatening foreign countries, nor did he take corrupt power from criminal sources, but they killed him sir. They killed him. And their intention is to enslave us all and rob us of our rights law by never ending law. Please come back soon sir, if not in spirit, then in earnest.

Do keep in mind that Thomas Jefferson was not a "Founding Father." He was in Paris as the Ambassador to France while the Convention was meeting in Philadelphia. He did have some cogent thoughts on the Constitution after a copy was forwarded to him, there.

A vote of five to four because four Supreme Court Justices can’t read a simple twenty seven word sentence?

I would say not being impressed is an understatement.
