Parents seek to stop candy throwing at parades

Some British Columbia in are trying to end the practice of throwing candy from floats during parades.

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. —

Some British Columbia in are trying to end the practice of throwing candy from floats during parades.

The campaign in Dawson Creek is the latest effort by people concerned about children bolting into the parade to scoop up the sweets. Efforts to end candy tossing have been adopted in Kamloops, Prince George and Fort St. John.

A Fort St. John town council member and parade marshal, Larry Evans, says float drivers may lose sight of the children when they dart into the parade. In his town, candy throwing is not banned but parade participants are asked to hand out treats rather than throw them.

For now, Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Stefanie Oestreich says there are no plans to ban candy throwing at the town's annual Fall Fair.

In the future, they’re going to throw carrot sticks and broccoli spears, driving the children away from the floats. Actually, if the parade marchers toss a mixture of candy and carrot sticks, they can probably create a stasis where the kids don’t move.

Why not just cancel all parades to conserve energy? <---sarcasm Is holding onto a child's hand no longer politically correct?

By the way, do they still throw beads and candy at Mardi Gras?

I learn, that I'm not the only one whose thought processes work that way.

Um, I know this is a rhetorical question, but why don’t parents just set limits for their children and say they are not allowed to scamper after candy unless it is immediately in front of them? Hmmmmmmm.

I think that children are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. I have walked in several parades since Memorial Day and the throwers are pretty good at getting the candy to the curb and the children do look for the vehicles before darting to get their share of candy. The parents always caution them, as well.

Deaths are not uncommon during Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
