N.C. Senator's Hard-Line Conservatism Helped Craft Republican Social Agenda
Washington Post ^ | July 5, 2008 | Bart Barnes and Matt Schudel

Jesse Helms, the North Carolina Republican senator whose uncompromising conservatism made him one of America's leading crusaders against communism, liberalism, tax increases, abortion, homosexuality, affirmative action and court-ordered busing to integrate schools, died yesterday at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, N.C. He was 86.

"Next to Ronald Reagan," Fred Barnes wrote in the Weekly Standard in 1997, "Jesse Helms is the most important conservative of the last 25 years."

Actually one of the fairer reviews of the great Senator’s life. Thanks for the post.

He supported prayer in public schools, free enterprise, a strong military, a balanced budget and what he called "decency, honor and spiritual and moral cleanliness in America."

I'm originally from NC and had the privilege to vote for Senator Helms on several occasions.

I remember watching him on WRAL doing his commentaries on the evening news. My old man thought Helms was the cat's meow and would watch those commentaries the way some people watch a sporting event.

He put the whole package together. I knew that he came out of television, but the part about his commentaries was new to me.

I know Fred Thompson (remember him?) is doing that now; but, he. sadly, is a political dud.

Rush, of course, does it, but he won’t run for anything. Thinking out loud here, maybe Rush could turn his Morning Update over to some rising star to lay groundwork for a renascent conservative movement.

Good idea - re: Rush giving his morning commentaries over to a rising conservative “star”.

Yes, I remember well Jesse Helms commentaries on WRAL TV each night (in my growing up years our family watched them every night).

Russell Capps has done some commentary with local radio / tv stations since then - and does a great job locally voicing the common sense conservative position -— Wake County Taxpayers Association is his sponsoring organization.... He ran and won a Legislative seat but then was targeted by the NC Lib Dem machine and was defeated in the last election sadly.

Now we have local governmental Television - in which we have the Demonrat Cary mayor’s ugly face and liberal views foisted upon us - paid for by taxpayer dollars......ugh ugh ugh.

Jesse Helms was a pioneer in so many important areas.

We will likely never see one like him again....sadly.

Fair????

You gotta be kidding!

Read it again - this article is pure hate speech and slander. There is not a good word about Helms in it. Everything in it tries to paint him as a racist and bigot. No mention of his accomplishments, or of some of the personal tragedies and hardships he labored through as he stood at the front of the battle lines advancing conservatism.

The passage of conservatives like Helms and Reagan with no one to replace them is why the Republicans are where they are today. The Republicans’ problem is not that we will be wandering in the wilderness for the next four years of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid intifada, but that there are no Moses out there to lead when the people will need a leader.

You, sir, obviously are lacking in reading comprehension.

I remember when MTV “Rock the Dope” years ago had some doofus on who was putting together a campaign to defeat Helms. Along with the kid was Eddie Vedder, looking like he hadn’t washed his hair in a month, talking up the kid. Helms of course went on to win.

This article did give some of Senator Helms’ important contributions and stands: for instance:

He supported prayer in public schools, free enterprise, a strong military, a balanced budget and what he called “decency, honor and spiritual and moral cleanliness in America.”

The above paragraph is right on the money and include the values that most North Carolinians supported - and many still do.

No it was not FAIR - but it was a fairer listing of his stances - correctly listing them - than some of the articles I have read.
