In an era of absurdly increasing college costs, imho, the college benefit is more fair to members of the military.

I owe the US my life. After leaving active duty I went into the NG and the GI Bill and the NG paid for seven years of college. Not only did I get the GI Bill, the monthly payments for the NG helped immensely. I also earned two $5000 NG Tennessee Scholarships in three years. I was willing to work but many of my peers would not consider the military because of the post Viet Nam stigma and the Jimmy Carter Presidency.
