Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Wednesday rejected a proposal from the Group of Eight (G8) nations to impose quantitative restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, saying that India needed to focus on development and poverty alleviation.

Instead, the Prime Minister called upon the industrialised nations to set an example in reduction of carbon emissions. The G8 must show the leadership that it has always promised by taking and then delivering truly significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, he said.

"We have not seen demonstrable progress on even the low levels of agreed GHG reduction from developed countries and, indeed, the prognosis is that their emissions as a whole will continue to rise even in the years to come," Dr. Singh told leaders of 16 major economies in Toyako, Japan.

The first and overriding priority of all developing countries is poverty eradication, the Prime Minister said. adding that more than 600mn people in India are still without access to modern energy sources and a quarter of its population lives on less than a dollar a day.

It sounds like India and China think thay deserve a free pass in regards to limits on greenhouse gas emissions. The combined nations have 2.4 billion people or close to 40% of the world's population.

This Global Warming BS is not for India and China to worry about. It is for the United States. The United States has to fix the CO2 problem for the entire planet.

Is the United States so stupid to fall for this hoax?

Since you mention this "free pass" nonsense, why should the size of nations matter, when a per-capita cap would be more meaningful? Don't take India as a whole nation. Treat the individual states as separate nations, so as to make the whole picture comparable to countries like Japan, Korea and Germany, who benefit from their smaller sizes.

I say poverty is a far more serious concern than any of this global warming baloney, even if it is true.

The planet's forces have been dynamic since its formation. The natural systems, of which humans are an integral part, and inception of, will learn to re-adjust, even if half the planet's landmass needs to be under water.

Yep, it's us who should "focus" on setting an example of going out of business...

Is it really time for another TLA (Three Letter Acronym)? It takes as long to say “G H G” as it does to say “Green House Gas” and as far as writing it, you have to say Greenhouse Gas (GHG), so there’s no advantage.

Ahem, it's the "us" who's asking for cuts. Specifically, G8.

Aw, heck, guys...I guess its contagious. Australia just ratified Kyoto and now they want to delay implementation.
I guess the whole world is waiting for the USA to be the first to impale itself over global warming.

Australia could delay emissions trade beyond 2010:
