Libertarians Favor Obama and Other Looks at Election 2008 (So what this about Bob Barr)

Libertarians Favor Obama and Other Looks at Election 2008

Libertarian voters make up 4% of the nation’s likely voters and they favor Barack Obama over John McCain by a 53% to 38% margin. Three percent (3%) would vote for some other candidate and 5% are not sure. These results, from an analysis of 15,000 Likely Voter interviews conducted by Rasmussen Reports, challenges the conventional wisdom which assumes that strong support for a Libertarian candidate would hurt John McCain.

So now Libertarians favor higher taxes on the rich, income redistribution, socialized health care, gun control, etc.?

That Libertarians would favor a socialist demonstrates an astonishing and unfortunate lack of political consistency. It not does not speak well of Libertarians.

Many who claim to be libertarian do not even know what libertarianism is or what it stands for. They know they are pro-choice and in favor of legalizing many drugs and that’s all they need to know.

I’m surprised by this. I would think more libertarians would be voting 3rd party. Baldwin and Barr are far closer to libertarian ideals than either of the 2 major candidates.

Actually, Libertarians don’t take a position on abortion. They are typically evenly split on that issue.

Well, I would guess some Libertarians “main” issue could be drug legalization or anti war/ anti foreign involvment...which could lead them to Obama.

Or smaller government, lower taxes which would lead you to, at the very least, vote against Obama.

Wait, did I say the do? I’m against abortion, but I think it should be a state issue. It’s not a federal issue UNLESS life is defined at conception, then the government would be protecting legal life (and real life in my opinion).

I guess it all depends on how they want to break people down.

A lot of libertarians wouldn't define themselves as "socially liberal."

They just don't want government to get involved in anything.

The fact that Rasmussen Reports apparently misuses the word "fiscal" isn't an encouraging sign.

But there is at least one "Libertarian for Obama".

He says he's "a North Virginia attorney who used to live in the same Washington, D.C. apartment building as Barack Obama and his wife and had the good fortune to share an elevator ride once with him."

Thank You, you hit the nail directly on the head. "... an astonishing and unfortunate lack of political consistency."

I can't say if Rassmussen 'skewed' the poll on purpose, or if those answering did ... however if you take it at face value (and this is a large and respected pollster) the results show exactly what you said.

Are these the same people who like to come to FR claiming that the Republican Party is not 'conservative' enough?

In any case, I'm not surprised at this figure. As I've seen on FR, some of them do want Obama to win, not because they agree with his positions on issues, but for different reasons: (1) to teach the Republican Party a lesson for ignoring them in favor of the 'religious wing', and (2) to let the country led by Obama, Reid, and Pelosi (plus some new 1-2 Justices) for 4-8 yrs so that by 2012 or 2016 the country will be tired of liberalism and give way to a 'conservative' leader emerges.

Liberatarian has become a label that is being used by young people who are interested in legal dope and sex with whomever or whatever but who think like, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi are like, so uncool. It sounds hip and justifies getting loaded.

Similarly, folks like Bill Maher use the label to avoid the obvious—they are hard-core, statist, liberals. They have about as much in common with traditional, small-government libertarians as does the planet Uranus. Again, it sounds hip and cool.

The term has lost it’s meaning through overuse by people who have no idea what it means. So it’s really not surprising that BO grabs most of their support.

In June, Rasmussen Reports asked 15,000 Likely Voters if they were fiscally conservative, moderate, or liberal and if they were socially conservative, moderate, or liberal. This created a total of 16 possible combinations (not sure was a fourth option for both questions). However, 87% of voters fit into one of seven combinations. Libertarians, defined as fiscally conservative and socially liberal, are the smallest of these seven combinations.

These were not self identified libertarian voters, they were Rassmussen declared libertarian voters.

Third Party candidates are anti war same as Obama also:

Bobb Barr while at USC in 1967 joined the Young Democrats of America, and rallied against the Vietnam War.

His parents disapproved, and threatened to cut off financial support if he continued his “flaming liberal” activities

On the Colbert Report on June 4, 2008, Barr confirmed that he now supports ending marijuana prohibition, as well as the War on Drugs

At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages ( Barr supports same sex marriage)

Barr has called for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, leaving no permanent military bases.

A press release from Barr’s presidential campaign stated: “The next president should commit to a speedy and complete withdrawal from Iraq, and tell the Iraqi people that the U.S. troops will be going home

Barr Does Not support the Patriot Act which has kept us from further attacks since 9/11

Barr has been a vocal opponent of President George W. Bush’s claim of authorization to wiretap transnational phone calls without individual judicial license. (Another favorite of the left.)

More recently, Barr has become a prominent member of the American Civil Liberties Union, sometimes doing paid consulting on privacy issues.

Barr had acquiesced to his then-wife having an abortion in 1983.
He had also invoked a legal privilege during his 1985 divorce proceeding so he could refuse to answer questions on whether he’d cheated on his second wife with the woman who is now his third.”

I'm not sure they are Rassmussen defined.

One definition of Libertarian includes: "one who advocates individual rights and free will". (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:Libertarian&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title)

The Libertarian Party platform states: " 1.3 - Personal Relationships - Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the rights of individuals by government, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships." as well as " 1.4 - Abortion - Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration."

Sounds like that is socially liberal when measuring conservative vs liberal stances on issues. But as someone else pointed out that Libertarians are against the War on Terror as reflected in their desire by ending the war in Iraq, bring the troops home (which even conservatives want - once the job is done) and begin isolationist policies. Obama gives in to their their desire to end the war and thus they could conceivable vote for him - thus the poll may not be that far off.

I think this is similar to all of the manufactured "news" stories that talk about the many "conservatives" or at least Republicans who will vote for Obama. Such false news stories are just propaganda for Obama, and I suspect that this poll is just manufactured to help Obama and demoralize the right.

So he is playing a little game here.

As I said before that leave two possibilities: 1) a large well respecter pollster ignored the real facts and made the conclusion they wanted or 2) the individuals polled, lied and that means a lot of people lied.
