£800,000 home, a life on benefits, no wonder Al Qaeda ambassador Abu Qatada's smiling

The picture is an affront to all victims of terrorism and their families.

Abu Qatada, Al Qaeda's ambassador in Europe, strolls along a busy London street fondling his prayer beads.

This is the first photograph of the greying 47-year-old - said to be one of the world's most dangerous terrorist suspects - since he was released on bail from a high-security prison after the courts ordered that he could not be sent home to Jordan because his human rights would have been breached.

Out on bail: Prayer beads in hand, Al Qaeda's ambassador in Europe takes a stroll to the shops near his home

It was taken on July 7, hours after the families and friends of the 52 innocent people killed in the London transport suicide bombings three years ago remembered their loved ones at a memorial service.

The radical cleric was freed three weeks ago when a judge ruled that there were no grounds to detain him after previous attempts to deport him to Jordan, where he was convicted of terror attacks and bomb plots, were defeated in the courts. Described by another judge as 'a truly dangerous individual', he remains an iconic figure for many supporters of jihad.

Lawyers successfully argued in the Court of Appeal that Qatada could stay because evidence used against him in any prosecution in Jordan might have been obtained by torture - a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The fanatical preacher, who was 20 stone but slimmed down on prison food, was pictured on a shopping trip near the £800,000 home he shares with his wife and children. Exact details of the location where the Qatada family are living on benefits of an estimated £50,000 a year are protected by court orders.

I was thinking maybe a .22 Smith & Wesson automatic. I could do it up close and personal with a quart of pigs blood to dump on him for good measure.

Dump it and drop him.

Britain sure has turned into a loser country. That Mohammedan slob wouldn’t last 20 minutes on a stroll around here...and no grand jury would indict either.

i'll say it again: sometimes you get what you ask for, and the brits have been begging for it... maybe this time they'll get it.

I’ll give you $50, a dull butter knife and a 1/4 lb of spoiled bacon.

Sorry, it is all I can afford at present.

"Al Qaeda's ambassador in Europe"

Umm...what? Hopefully this is a figure of speech, though the thought of the EUcrats establishing diplomatic relations with this gaggle of murderers is unfortunately not completely unbelievable.

The rulings mean that - despite Tony Blair's promise in the aftermath of the 7/7 attacks that the 'rules of the game have changed' - not a single international terrorist has been forcibly removed from this country.

Would any other country treat him quite so well? Few other countries would have treated Abu Qatada quite so generously as Britain. Here, Christian Gysin examines the contrasts...

The U.S.

Qatada would have been arrested under the Terrorism Act and declared a ' dangerous person'. He could have expected a life sentence for having had an envelope containing money destined for the 'mujahedin in Chechnya'.

If he won an appeal, the U.S. would have tried to return him to Jordan or have him extradited to another Middle Eastern country. He would not receive any state handouts.

If I'm reading this correctly, life is good in Britain for terrorists and their families. He's living in a $1.6 million home and receiving $100,000 in public "benefits".

... the families and friends of the 52 innocent people killed ...

There should be enough financing and talent in this group to meet out 'appropriate' justice.' Even if it took a little while.
