Personal responsibility was the political buzzword of last week. The prime minister urged us to take personal responsibility for global waste, poverty and pollution by eating up our greens - I hope he himself left a clean plate after consuming his 57 varieties of high-status food at the G8.
Less absurdly, David Cameron spoke of personal responsibility at a by-election launch in the miserable depths of Glasgows Gallowgate about broken Britain. It is a society, he said, that is in danger of losing its sense of personal responsibility, social responsibility, common decency and yes, even public morality.
It is remarkable that a Conservative politician can now talk like this without being ridiculed. No one disagrees any longer that Britain is in parts and in places broken; Gallowgate is a horrifying microcosm of broken families, broken spirits, broken health and broken schools; it is a dark place of chronic unemployment, violence and crime, of disorder and fear - a disgrace to the supposedly developed world.

Politically incorrect translation: Britain is harboring unemployed young Muslims and third-world immigrants who have nothing to lose by perpetrating crimes.
You summed it up nicely.
Not to mention those vicious gangs of "Keep Left" signs.
Put them in jail for a long time, and they’ll quickly learn that they do have something to lose.
That’s part of it, but most of these are disaffected young white kids. Let’s not overplay the Muslim angle - these are the children of Socialist Britain.
Britain: Try going back to those empty churches you use as museums now.
Little Alex and his droogs, out for a bit of the old ultra-violence.
We’re doing it too.
Breeding feral young men that hardly rise to the definition of human. Uncivilized, savage and barbaric.
I said to my Dad some twenty years ago that I thought we were becoming so “civilized” that we were in grave danger of becoming uncivilized. I think I was correct.
The left categorizes appropriate punishment that has been successfully applied in the past as “uncivilized” behavior. Therefore it is no longer uniformly applied, and the results obvious to the most casual observer.
What’s wrong with taking a convicted prisoner and forcing him to make little rocks out of big ones for eight hours a day? I’d be willing to bet that he would think twice about knocking off a gas station after ten years of this.
The “noble and enlightened” idea that rehabilitation rather than punishment should be the goal of our prisons is the root of the problem.
There is nothing wrong in Britain that can’t be solved by more government and higher taxes. /s
England has high unemployment. England needs soldiers. England’s prisons are full. England is in such poor condition that they can no longer even imprison burglars, an intolerable situation to every honest citizen.
I see a solution to their problems.
Inexpensive field training camps under military discipline would be a great help in rehabilitating these troubled yobs into disciplined and productive citizens.
They wouldn’t be getting military training, but learning how to lead structured and useful lives, making them an asset to future employers.
At the same time, they could be contributing to environmental improvement in underdeveloped rural areas, performing labor intensive projects that would stimulate the local economy.
I can’t believe the Brits are allowing this to go on in their country. How long will it be before Buckingham Palace becomes multi-family housing for muslims?
Believe it friend. They made a pact with the devil when they went down the road toward socialism. And we are heading in the same direction. The wages of sin is death.
Pretty soon civilized Britain will be ready for the Man-on-Horseback and he will come.
England is eliminating jail terms for petty crimes, including mugging and burglary.
Labour destroyed England. It’s that simple.
The same sentiment could be voiced about us.
I'm not sure what it was that turned out leaders into quislings - threats on their lives or limitless bribes - but we are being handed over the same as the Brits are.
