SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The Chicago Tribune Media Group said Monday that Ann Marie Lipinski would step down as the editor of its flagship newspaper, with the publication preparing to go through another round of layoffs and shrink the number of its printed pages.
Lipinski had been editor of the Tribune since 2001 and had been with the paper since 1978. Her resignation will take effect on Thursday. In a statement, Lipinski said that "the position is not the fit it once was."
The Tribune said that Gerould Kern, the paper's vice president of editorials since 2003, will serve as the new editor.

It’s a shame. I thought she did well at the Olympics.
I bet Tara Lipinski is the first thing most people think about when they see that last name. Now that I think about it, she sort of just disappeared from the public eye.
rats deserting a sinking ship...
Isn’t she Elvis Presley’s widow?

‘Chicago Tribune’ Editor Lipinski Resigns; Kern Takes Over
"I began my editorship seven months before 9/11 and in the seven years since have become accustomed and even comfortable with editing and managing through crisis and change," she wrote in her memo Monday. "But professionally, this position is not the fit it once was. Personally, my family and I believe it is time."((OT but speaking of Kern(ing), the (( (mistakenly?) appearing at the very end of of that quote looks like an E&P emoticon expressing extreme sadness and depression.

Dropping Like Flies
Its an axiom of sports that baseball team managers are hired to be fired. Turn in a couple bad seasons, or go on a losing streak, or run afoul of your owner, and youre outta there,
Lately, the job security for newspaper publishers and editors seems to be almost as bad. Todays victim is Chicago Tribune Editor Ann Marie Lipinski, who wasnt fired, but clearly decided shed had enough of owner Sam Zell and his Zellots running roughshod and making changes to her paper faster than she wanted to. Her departure follows the recent early retirement of Tribune Publisher Scott C. Smith; the resignation of Wall Street Journal Managing Editor Marcus Brauchli, whos now replacing retired Washington Post Executive Editor Len Downie; and the firing a few months ago of Los Angeles Times Editor Jim OSheawho followed various other editors and publishers out the door in L.A. over the past couple of years, with Times Publisher David Hiller is rumored to be gone any day now. Plus the firings, resignations and retirements of so many other editors and publishers lately that its hard to keep track of them all. Its been a real bloodbath.
