Brit Hume to Step Down From Fox News
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, July 15, 2008 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 07/15/2008 12:35:37 PM PDT by kristinn

Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.

Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.

In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.

A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

With that time slot, I often did not get to watch. I am not usually at home at 4 CST.

I know. First John Gibson and now Brit Hume. Pretty soon we’ll have nobody to truly represent our way of thinking there. Oh dear.

Boy I hope to look half as good as Brit when I hit 65.....

I never really thought about his age...... I just assumed he would always be there.

I may have looked as good at 65, but at 66, the problems began.

.......Cavuto is pretty good......

Actually, he is outstanding. I tape his show and watch it every day. He pulls no punches and lands them squarely. I would think Neil is the most feared by the Rats.

NO reason? they could bring in Laura Ingraham, Major Garret, or someone new- how cool would it be to see a guy like Mark Steyn doing the evening news? You know you’d watch THAT.

‘Where is Neal Cavuto?...’

I’ve been wondering the same thing.....Brit is my absolute favorite. Neil is also someone with good common sense and he’s not afraid to express this.....John Gibson was the same, only not always as tactful as Cavuto....maybe that got him in trouble.

maybe just me, but, lately, I’ve thought that it was a bit more obvious that Brit doesn’t agree with Obama’s positions. maybe he feels more free to do this now....go for it Brit!!

Megyn is NOT just eye candy (as some here might posit). She is an insightful woman with a keen ability to ferret out idiots when allowed to do so in interviews.

Funny how we all perceive people. When Megyn comes on, my TV goes off. To me she is nothing but obnoxious and a drama queen.

Enough with all the blondes! Bring back John Gibson! I love Laura dearly, but she is always talking over and interrupting. Same with Megyn. As bright as she can be and with all the facts she has at hand, she is too loud and talks over people.

BrettBaier would be my choice.

BritHume is just the best. Steady and strong. He was the reason I pestered and pestered and pestered Comcast to get Fox. I wish him well and his appearances in the future will be awaited with eagerness.

‘Jim Angle is Brit’s “go to” guy.’

Angle is another good guy. Don’t think anyone can replace Brit. Angle should be the heir apparent if the show continues but, most likely, Bret Baier will get the job...he’s ok too, but, Angle seems more in line with Brit’s style.

Brit -IS- Fox News. Seems like every major event in the last 10 years has been reported to me via Brit. I will miss him every evening during dinner.
Hopefully Brit will be there to report major events for years to come.

Oh no! His show is how I relax. I always wished the last half was a full hour... VERY annoyed.

There is no reason for me to watch FOX after Brit leaves.

Right...they will probably replace him with yet another over made-up bimbo in an under fabric-ed skirt.

‘NBC would be wise to tap him for Meet the Press.’

Brit would certainly add credibility and class to NBC BUT......ewwww, would hate to see Brit on one of the Democrat support networks.

I like Jamie Colby....but since they gave her an anchor job, she appears so "tarted up" - heavy make up - short skirt.

Why can't FOX let their lady anchors look like ladies and not hookers?

‘Wendell is wayyyy to lib for me,....’

agree! and, Wendell needs speech lessons.....almost every other word is “er”.....seems someone who has been in the news reporting business for as long as Goler should be able to speak a sentence without injecting “er” after every word.
