Yesterday's "global cooler" is today's "global warmer" and Andrew Bolt, an influential Australian writer, is in love with the power of skepticism.
He is not alone. Indeed, millions of Brits are turning away from Al Gore's hysterical exclamation marks, to embrace inconvenient question marks.
In his thought-provoking book The Best of Andrew Bolt - Still Not Sorry, the Herald-Sun's columnist raises some interesting points too that - I for one - share:
Clearly, we need to be chasing terrorists, as opposed to evil "global warming" skeptics.
In many ways, though, the Left's climate battles are old red herrings, and their prophets are distracting patriots from America's real security issues. So, it is telling that Obama honors An Inconvenient Truth's message, but despises wars against Jihad-friendly regimes. And, it is revealing that Jimmy Carter, is so soft on terrorists, but so very mean to Republicans.
Yet step back in time to September, 1979. There, you will see some really cool sideburns, and flares, no doubt. But turn your head, and you'll also see President Carter signing the National Climate Program Act, in order to beat "global cooling" and predict apocalyptic catastrophes. Ignore Iran.
Amazing? No. Just enter my time machine below and you will see how secular evangelicals package apocalyptic messages to promote their faith:
Headline One: "How and Why Earth Will End"
March 23, 1913: "Scientists believe our universe will some day plunge into the sun," asserts the Washington "global widening" Post, and the Chicago Tribune. Who knew?
"The claim is based on stellar discoveries which appear to prove that the earth and the sun and all the planets are constantly growing in size and that their final unison into one vast whole seems inevitable."
On top of which, "science" also offers more so-called evidence. "That the earth is a falling structure, crumbling slowly and inevitably yielding to outside forces and becoming deformed far beyond its limit of strength, Dr John Hayford, noted Washington scientists has offered proofs." (Plus, Dr. Karl Snyder, the eminent physicist, posits "the world is gravitating toward the sun and will eventually plunge into it" in his scientific text, World Machine.)
Headline Two: "Control of Temperature Said Vital"
April 9, 1957: The Associated Press, Santa Monica, reports that a "noted physicist says studies of temperature control ultimately will be more important to the survival of man than atomic energy."
The UCLA's Dr. Kaplan, 54, has faith that the "ocean levels will rise at least 40 feet and inundate vast areas of the earth in the next 50 or 60 years unless atmospheric temperatures can be controlled." And, notably, man's "tremendous use" of gas and oil will hurt New Yorkers, as opposed to wild orgies, expressive divorces, and drug cartels.
The good news? "Control by man of the earth's weather and temperature is within the realm of practicality now," states the (surprise) U.S. Committee for the 1957 International Geophysical Year.
Headline Three: "Does Ice Age Threaten Earth?"
June 12, 1975: The United Press International, Washington, recognizes that the weathermen "are hard pressed to forecast conditions a few days ahead" but pontificate about apocalyptic "signs of change."
Why? Because "there has been a global cooling trend in the last thirty years" science declares; because we "now live in an unusual period, viewed in the context of earth's overall history" assert our scribes; because much of the "United States has cooled more than the global average during the past 15 years - summers one or two degrees cooler in some places." (And, presumably, because reporters spin.)
All of which suggests that the science is moody.
But there's more. "It is not primarily the advance of a major ice sheet over our farms and cities that we must fear, devastating as this would be, for such changes take thousands of years to evolve," states the National Academy of Sciences. (Emphasis added.) "Rather, it is persistent changes of the temperature and rainfall in areas committed to agriculture use, changes in the frost content of Canadian and Siberian soils and changes of ocean temperature in areas of high nutrient production, for example, that are of more immediate concern."
Headline Four: "Volcano dust may Cool Earth 2 Years"
October 10, 1982: Volcanoes side with global coolers. States the Associated Press: "Dust from a Mexican volcano will produce a cooling effect around the Earth for the next two years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric estimates." Specifically, "Murray J. Mitchell, a scientist with the information service...said he expected the cooling effect to persist for the next two years, followed by a rapid recovery."
Headline Five: "The good news is Canadian winters may moderate..."
October 22, 1983: The CP reports: "A predicted warming of the earth's climate - known as the greenhouse effect - could alter the landscape of Canada, flooding some areas and turning others into dustbowls, experts say." Global warming is back. What's more, "Southern Canada can expect a temperature increase of three to five degrees, while the north will be about 10 degrees warmer."
"While balmy temperatures will moderate Canada's bitter winters," there is still reason to fear because - I quote - "Prince Edward Island will likely be cut in half by a rising Atlantic Ocean" although "the Hudson Bay lowlands could become the country's food basket, studies predict." So, shall we offer virgins to an angry volcano?

One day "global cooling" is in. And then? "Global warming" is in. Today, the man in the subway shouting to us about the apocalypse is insane, but the press's apocalypse is gospel because...? Because campaigning reporters are spin artists and green hypocrites? Yes, in 2008, Andrew Bolt is right because history is on his side, laughing (or crying) with him.
