George Bush U-turn opens way to nuclear talks between US and Iran

Tim Reid in Washington

President Bush is sending a top US diplomat to meet Iran’s nuclear negotiator this weekend, a major break with his hardline stance towards Tehran and the closest contact between the countries since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

In a significant departure from Mr Bush’s long-standing refusal to talk to Tehran until it has abandoned its nuclear enrichment programme, William Burns, the Under-Secretary of State and America’s third most senior diplomat, will travel to Switzerland to attend talks between Iranian and European officials on Saturday.

Bush wilting at the prospect of $200/barrel oil? One thins for sure. This will be touted as a monumental achievement. Maybe he is hoping that if he has Bin Laden’s head on the platter before leaving his office, all these will be forgiven.

This is a one-time deal,” a State Department official said.

I have always believed we know about ten percent of what has been going on since 9 11. I hope I live to read the reality of the last few years. Reading between the lines of the Oil for Food scandal, the movements of Saddam pre invasion, the Israel bombing of Syria with little coverage or Syrian complaints. The findings regarding French and Russian activities pre Iraq invasion...........there is something going on to cause this change.

One thing about Bush....he really doesn’t care about his poll numbers.

Au contraire. It’s already being widely used and talked about by the left as further support of b. hussein’s “wisdom” and credibility, and further Bush-bashing, saying the white house is finally admitting what obama’s advocated all along.

I think it’s lunacy and a lot of us see NO good coming of this - at worst, it will give Iran more time to steadily develop nukes quietly while all this “international negotiation” is going on.

I see this is Iran's last chance to end their nuke program once and for all.
Israel will get the green light if negotiations fail.... if it fails this weekend, then, we can see Israel and the US attacking Iran very shortly.

First Korea, now this.

Legacy-Fever has set in.

It always gets crazy crazier than usual in DC during the last few months of a lame duck Presidency when they start making policy decisions based on what they hope historians will write rather than what is right.

Let’s hope this doesn’t become April Glaspie, the sequel.

I agree. I see this as one last offer to Iran to abandon their nuclear program before they are attacked.

Worked for Libya.

Oh I don't know about that. I could also be that Bush is giving Iran an ultimatum, do or die.

We can't know for sure. All I can say is when the dust settles in Iran, I can only hope that it will have huge craters that no man can venture in for a few hundred years.

A possible talking point:
“We have no opinion on your Jew-Persian conflicts, such as your dispute with Israel on nuke.”

Well, what worries me is that Iran could give some token gesture with little substance, and U.S. would take it as a done deal.

BUMP!

I think this is the bottom line to the story. Before we take the plunge into chaos, let's give diplomacy it's best shot.

Sadly, on the other side, this is viewed as "weakness".

Too bad the Prez has to send Nicky ‘softShoe’ Burns when he could of had John Bolton, the Sheriff to front the Iranian Mullahs.
