Randi Weingarten has delusions of grandeur. She thinks she should be given the power of a dictator instead of those of a teachers union president. Instead of just teaching kids, Weingarten imagines that she should become doctor, nanny, nutritionist, psychologist, and mother to every kid in America. She imagines that she should be given the care and feeding of all the nation's kids.
Parents? Who need 'em when we've got Mother Weingarten to trot them off to re-education camps where they will be fed and cared for on a daily basis?
Catch the arrogance, see this nanny-state despot lining up her dream state in her tiny, anti-family mind.
“Can you imagine a federal law that promoted community schools — schools that serve the neediest children by bringing together under one roof all the services and activities they and their families need?” Ms. Weingarten is expected to ask in the speech, a copy of which was provided by the union to The New York Times.
“Imagine schools that are open all day and offer after-school and evening recreational activities, child care and preschool, tutoring and homework assistance,” the speech reads. “Schools that include dental, medical and counseling clinics.”
Yes, imagine it. Imagine the billions of dollars needed to bring all these services from government to kids. Imagine the further destruction of the family as it happens, too....

What a refreshing idea! In fact that was the way things were in America until the 1960s when the liberal do-gooders prevailed. In those days a person didn't become a teacher, a cop or a fireman unless they were dedicated to the profession and were willing to make a financial sacrifice to enter public service. In those days the words "public service" really meant something.

I think we shouldn’t expect schools to be all things to all people. They should be focused on education. We don’t need them to provide every other service from preschool to a full service carwash.

Pretty sure that the cops and firemen were in unions by that point.
What a Great Idea! This woman is a true visionary!
We should make sure they have good living conditions, too, so the school should be attached to an apartment complex.
To make sure they eat nutritious food without transfats, we’ll serve it up in the dining hall.
We should probably make sure they don’t reproduce, too, since they can’t even take care of themselves. Depo-Provera would be simplest, but suppose the records got misfiled, and we didn’t know when it ran out? Maybe straight-up sterilization is the answer.
To pay for it all, the residents can do chores for outside companies.

For most of the history of the US, unions were illegal. Union meetings and work actions were broken up by police and national guard troops, their leaders arrested, members fired from their jobs. That was during the period of America’s greatest increase in productivity and world power. And that is how I believe unions should be treated today if we are to regain the economic power we once had.
Obviously, you don’t believe in freedom of association then. Arresting and breaking up meetings? What could be more un-american?
The answer lies in Freedom. Let people form unions for the purposes of collective bargaining all they want... let the employers fire them all they want. The right balance will be struck over time. Ultimately, employee turnover is costly, and in some industries a certain amount of collective bargaining will be tolerated. In others, it won’t be.
Businesses can’t get together and fix prices, but union members can use their right of free association to fix the price of their labor. And if the employer doesn’t agree, then they strike and the employer can NOT fire strikers. If he replaces the striking workers, the union members commit violent acts against the replacements (scabs to unions) and refuse the allow the employer to carry on his lawful business. This is not free association and bargaining, it is extortion and would be illegal in any other context.
You are missing what I am saying. I know unions suck now. I am saying though, that the answer is Freedom. Let them get together and form a union, and let the employer fire them if they want. If the union commits crimes, then those are crimes.
Maybe so. Why don't you research it and get back to us? There were zero public employee unions where I lived at that time.
If workers want to form a club and get together to talk about sports, or home improvement, etc., then that would be okay. But the moment they begin discussing what their employer should pay them, then they enter the realm of price fixing, which is illegal for employers and should be illegal for workers. Otherwise, I agree with you.
People who work for the government should be restricted, like enlistments in the military. Careerism in government service is little more that “employment welfare”.
Yes, I have several years experience working with US civil service persons. AND I DO NOT RESPECT them as employees.
