Jay Leno on oil drilling in ANWR

Can someone please explain any rational basis for the Democrats' continued obstruction of drilling in ANWR?

There are an estimated 10 billion barrels of domestic oil waiting to be harvested in ANWR. ANWR comprises 19 million acres in Northeast Alaska, 17.5 million of which are totally off-limits to drilling or any other kind of economic activity.

In 1980 a Democrat controlled Congress, at the behest of President Jimmy Carter, set area 1002 aside for possible energy exploration. Since then, although there are active oil and gas wells in at least 36 U.S. wildlife refuges, we have been prevented from using this domestic source of oil.

The most recent attempt to authorize drilling in ANWR -- successfully filibustered by Senate Democrats in 2005 -- limited the surface disturbance to 2,000 acres, a very small portion of a very big coastal plain in a very big wildlife refuge in the biggest state in the Union. The vast majority of ANWR will be completely unaffected by drilling. It would occur only on a small part of the coastal plain where there already is some human habitation. Alaska has 141 million acres of protected lands, an area equal to the size of California and New York combined.

the game is afoot watson. liberals are prohibiting drilling and thereby subscribing to high gasoline prices which hurt people who drive to work, who must drive in their work, and who must use petroleum to do their work.

the question is, are they really for the “little guy”, or are they trying to turn independent men and women into collective “little guys” who need to be saved by liberals.

(yes, the game is afoot watson, and it is not pretty. liberals are kissing the asses of internationalists and selling u.s. sovereignty for power.)

IMHO

Prudhoe Bay, only 55 miles west of ANWR, has produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil since the 1970s. Decades of studies show this oil production has affected the environment negligibly. Environmental opponents of drilling cannot cite a single species driven toward extinction or even a decline in numbers attributable to Prudhoe Bay. That drilling also was done with decades-old technology and methods far less environmentally sensitive than ANWR would require.

Flowing at one million barrels a day -- equal to 20 percent of today's domestic oil production -- ANWR oil would almost equal America's daily imports from Saudi Arabia. I just don't get it.

Neither do I.

EnvironMENTAList will tie themselves into knots (or trees) to prevent the US from exploiting its own resources, but don't give a darn about getting the same product from somewhere else that doesn't have the same environmental standards they insist we have....

In other words, they can't see the forest for the trees, but that's OK, they like trees.

I don't think they have ANY idea just what all is made from oil, from the gas and diesel that harvests the soybeans for their tofu and delivers it to market, to the plastic for their bottled water, to the Prozac and lithium they ingest to make themselves appear "normal"....

They’re dependent on environmental groups for election. So on that basis, to them it’s rational.

Second Tuesday in November in even numbered years, divisible by four, aka Presidential election.
They want the economy to tank, blame Pres. Bush and repubs.

I will bet that if O'Bama is elected they have a change of heart and grudgingly drill ANWR .
If O'Bama loses, they will continue to oppose drilling. Payback to the American people for being so stupid as to not vote for 'their man'.

Everybody talks about gas prices, and they are right to an extent. High energy costs will drag down the economy and increase the cost of living.

Unfortunately there is a much greater danger from high imported energy prices. Imported oil costs the US $700 BILLION a year. The country simply cannot sustain that kind of expense. The nation will be financially ruined, period. I shudder to think what the results of that will be.

For Democrats to succeed, America has to fail.

And conversely, for America to succeed, Democrats have to fail.

I watched The Dark Knight, and I think the Joker is pretty much the symbol of rational Democrats.

In February, the entire country will switch to digital....a change similar to switching from the old "tube" TVs of the past...EXCCEPT...it's government mandated and no one is exempt.

We are also being told to change all our lightbulbs....leaving us ALL with new lightbulbs with a very dangerous component.

So what dangerous components in these TV converters do they carry? Could it be that we can all be watched by the government?

“Can someone please explain any rational basis for the Democrats’ continued obstruction of drilling in ANWR?”

I guess we could ask John McCain since he agrees with them, and has voted against it in the past. He explanation was: “I’m an environmentalist.”

But I think the answer is that most of those who oppose it are ideologues on this issue, so it’s not rational. And many of them privately want higher gas prices to cut consumption rather than drilling to increase supply.

They’ll stick with that position until the voters sufficiently scare and threaten enough of them with electoral defeat.

“I shudder to think what the results of that will be. “

One result will be that the OPEC nations and their assorted thug dictators and petty monarchs and royal families will own several trillion dollars of assets in the US and other Western nations.

So, those who have been saying: “Use up all that OPEC oil first and then we’ll still have ours, hardee har.” Think again about that one.
