In satirical payback, Obama camp denies New Yorker writer plane seat

But the New Yorker writer Ryan Lizza, whose long, long article on Barack Obama's early political days in Chicago's ward politics (available here) was the reason for the magazine's controversial cover by Barry Blitt depicting Obama as a Muslim, has been barred from traveling with Obama on his foreign field trip this week.

The freedom to reward friendly reporters and punish those who don’t toe the line is another luxury afforded to only liberal politicians. If McCain barred a hostile reporter from any event, there’d be hell to pay.

Hmm. I wonder if the press would call it “satirical payback” — ha ha! — if McCain barred a reporter from a flight?

They’d be on about this “assault on the first amendment” for days!

More proof Obama is a commie. If you don’t agree with him, he will shut you out and shut you down.

Could a Republican candidate get away with this kind of reward-and-punish treatment of MSM reporters? The Clintonistas did this kind of crap too, but if McCain tried it there would be headlines of outrage proclaiming his hostility to the 1st Amendment, how ‘thin-skinned’ he is, etc.

Will we see many articles about this episode proclaiming Obambi to be thin-skinned and hostile to a free press?

No, I didn’t think so. Double standards disgust me.

Thin skinned isn’t he?

How can he be President if he can’t take a freaking cartoon?!

His 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father, recounts his idealistic effusions: “Change won’t come from the top, I would say. Change will come from a mobilized grass roots. That’s what I’ll do. I’ll organize black folks. At the grass roots. For change.”

The New Yorker should have known better. Haven’t they heard that Muslims don’t react well to cartoons?

You are correct. Obama is all about information control: Is Barack Obama Snubbing the Foreign Press?

The Foreign press may not ask "the right questions" like the tamed poodles in the American press corp.

So Barry Blyt draws a satirical cartoon trying to show how childish all the rumors are about Obama, and Obama feels he has to “retaliate”, and he takes it out on Ryan Lizza, who had nothing to do with the cartoon.

That’s what we need, a President who is thin-skinned and lashes out at innocent people when he feels he’s been wronged.

Actually this is a good thing. Whereas (it's possible) the New Yorker might *actually* have been sympathetic with their irony, but still a ploy to sell magazines, this will make them take a more critical look at Obama I think. At least I hope so .....

Obama and that thing he’s married to are very vindictive. There’s going to be a lot of “paybacks” coming down the road if he gets in. He will do everything he can to put Rush, Hannity, et al out of business! Since his “genius” pal trolls FR and keeps him up to date on how we’re picking on him, he’ll probably try to close FR down too.

I wonder if that's the case. Lost amidst all the noise regarding the cartoon cover is the fact that the Lizza story is not a very flattering portrait of Obama. The story exposes Obama as a pretty ruthless dimestore Chicago-machine hack politician with an unsavory history. It doesn't at all match the glowing image of the transcendent leader that he's created.

Another example of just how hard Obama plays the political game. Obama believes he benefits by drawing the sharpest contrast possible between himself and those who attack him. He plays a game of leaving himself open to be attacked on patriotism, his religious history or his wife’s beliefs.

When he is attacked on these peripheral issues he brings it right to the center of the campaign agenda. He makes the attackers the issue. He continues to slide past the need to address the hard policy issues by posturing the issue as being a choice between those who support him and those who attack him. If nothing else, the approach sucks all the media oxygen away from John McCain.

It drives me crazy that conservative sites have allowed themselves to be marginalized to focus on these peripheral matters rather than the substantive policies where Obama truly is vulnerable. In past elections I would spend several hours each day on Free Republic reflecting and commenting on a broad range of issues. But, this time around it is hard to get enthusiastic over the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate. He is now doing better among white voters than either Gore or Kerry. And, the campaign is just really getting started.

Example, I am hearing this morning that Obama has ramped up his commitment to work with and provide funding to faith based groups who hope to help those who are disadvantaged. He is actively trying to engage McCain on questions of Christian values. It is a calculated attempt to dilute the conservative advantage at its very core.

My point is very simple. It is a terrible mistake to underestimate the strength of an opponent. Obama is a very tough political candidate, perhaps the best that the Democrats have ever put forward in a very long time. He is being given a free ride on complex policy issues while people diddle on the margins.

McCain wouldn't bar a hostile reporter, he'd just flip them the finger ;-)
