Former Virginia governor James S. Gilmore III, the state's Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, submitted false information on two financial disclosure forms that hid his ties to a government contractor embroiled in a legal dispute over allegations that two of its executives had conspired to defraud the federal government.
On the forms, the first filed in June 2007 for his presidential campaign and the second in May after he joined the U.S. Senate race, Gilmore said he was on the board of Windmill International.
Gilmore, who signed his name attesting that the information on the forms was "complete and correct," reported that Windmill International was based in Nashua, N.H.
But Gilmore was on the board of a Virginia-based company also called Windmill International. The two companies are not affiliated. The Virginia company, headed by Douglas Combs, a former Navy official, is at the center of an ongoing lawsuit alleging that Combs and others tried to secure fraudulent government contracts in Iraq.

Is this a hit piece, or does the Virginia GOP need to start facepalming right now?

Millions of illegal aliens sign their names attesting that the information on the forms is “complete and correct” under penalty of law (felony).
When can we start the prosecutions?
1) it’s a hit piece
2) it was a stupid mistake
3) at the end of the day, it would be insignificant if Gilmore wasn’t doing so poorly in the polls
No no.
It was a “gaffe”
I don't think it matters either way. Gilmore is down by something like 25 points and has no money. He's not going to win.
At least he didn’t call anybody a Macaca.
Can the GOP find NO qualified people?
To the contrary, Jim Gilmore is one of the most highly qualified Republicans in the Commonwealth.
He's just not very likeable.
I meant qualified as in able to correctly fill out forms, especially disclosure statements. One of our local reps, Marsha Blackburn, is facing the same sort of charges over $200,000 unfiled and charges of nepotism.
True. Gilmore is probably correct that a staff person did this. They probably Googled the name and put it in. Of course he was responsible for signing it.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I am sure that this is just as horrible as the Washington Post reporting on Barack Obama failing to disclose felonious acts on his application to be a lawyer.
Barack Obama used drugs like cocaine, but didn’t report this fact in his Bar application, however, it was a big part of his autobiography.
Oh ...wait ...Washington Post hasn’t reported on this - I guess I read about this somewhere else. Maybe the Washington Post will report on it soon. (I like kidding myself!!)
But I can understand the big difference - Gilmore could arguably claim that the name similarities were enough to cause minor confusion, so he shouldn’t be believed. On the other hand, the Big O had to hide facts, or he would have been prevented from becoming the Messiah, so he has to be given a pass.
It’s not a “name similarity”, they have the same name. Someone got the address wrong.
Everybody knows Gilmore was on the board of the company in Virginia, it wasn’t hidden. It’s a stupid hit piece, the kind the WP does all the time.
