Obama Campaign in Tizzy Over Troop Snub (Three Briefings in 45 Minutes on Flight to Paris)
Friday, July 25, 2008 | Kristinn

Posted on 07/25/2008 9:47:54 AM PDT by kristinn

Barack Obama's presidential campaign has been rocked over the bad publicity Obama is getting over his perceived snub of wounded troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

ABC News reports Obama staffers staged three separate briefings in just forty-five minutes on O-Force One as they flew from Berlin to Paris today.

Yesterday, the Obama campaign put out two conflicting reasons for canceling the visit. One blamed the Pentagon, the other said Obama chose not to visit over concerns the stop would be seen as political.

The Pentagon has responded to reporters queries saying that Obama was welcome to visit as a senator and would be able to bring a senate staffer with him, but no campaign staff (or media).

While Obama spokemen Robert Gibbs and retired Air Force Maj. General Scott Gration are spinning on the record, NBC News' Andrea Mitchell was reporting that Democrats are spreading rumors that John McCain's staff colluded with the Pentagon to scuttle the visit.

Obama's campaign has long recognized that his weakness is the perception of Obama as soft on the military and weak on patriotism. His week-long trip foreign trip was designed to showcase Obama's stature and ability to operate as commander-in-chief.

His snub of the wounded and his campaign's confused and malicious response shows that they believe his image in the minds of the voters back home has been gravely wounded.

Rush was just talking about this...how it’s the little stuff that sends out big red flags. Rush says Barry was just an innocent citizen walking through the streets of Berlin who just happened to see a crowd and make a speech. But to go see the troops...that would be a campaign event.

Any “bounce” McCain is now getting the polls isn’t so much from his strengths as it is from the growing stench coming from Obama.

I think the more on the spot he’s placed, the more he’s going to fumble verbally. Then we may hear more honesty than he’d admit to otherwise.

I’m hoping he’s getting enough rope to hang himself, and this “citizen of the world” who snubs our troops is coming into focus for those who are just dazzled by his so-called glamour.

He spoke in Berlin "not as a candidate, but as a citizen of the world" or words to that affect. Well, a "citizen of the world" can certainly visit injured troops in a military hospital.

I've heard MANY politicians (mostly Republicans) will visit VA hospitals WITHOUT A NEWS CREW - gasp! - because it is the right thing to do. Barry could have visited the troops in the hospital - maybe one or two would have been from Illinois - and visit as a US Senator! What a concept.

It would also be an opportunity to see a "reverse-Patton" whereby an injured soldier slaps the crap our of Barry for being a coward and stinking up a place of honor, then send Barry to the front.

Weak. Unbelievably weak.

Suppose there was some nefarious Pentagon plot to block his visit. He could have easily just shown up and say he wanted to visit wounded troops. There's no way the Pentagon could have blocked him then. This is such a ridiculous lie that it's amazing they would even try to put it out there.

Of course the MSM probably is too stupid and too much in the bag for "The One" to figure that out and will continue to repeat that idiotic claim.

Dang, it barely takes 45 minutes to fly from Berlin to Paris.

In other words, they spent the entire flight making excuses for Obama, the lame.

Did you see this one just above your thread?

DoD spokesman says Obama camp was reminded of political rules
Politico ^ | July 25th, 2008 | J Martin

Posted on Friday, July 25, 2008 12:55:17 PM by Perdogg

Chief Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell confirmed to Politico that Department of Defense officials cautioned Barack Obama’s campaign that his planned visit to wounded American troops in Germany could not be political in nature and that he would be barred from bringing along campaign staff and reporters. He also said that Cindy McCain recently requested to visit sailors aboard the U.S.N.S. Comfort and was denied.

“Sen. Obama is welcome to visit Landstuhl or any military hospital in his official capacity as a United States senator,” Morrell said in a brief interview. “But there is a DoD policy which governs campaigning and electioneering at military facilities that would have to be respected if he were to visit. That distinction was relayed and made clear to campaign, and they made a decision on their own based on that guidance.”

Morrell, in a subsequent interview, added that military officials told Obama he could only visit the military facility with his Secret Service detail and Senate staff.

“We made it clear to him that campaign staff and press would not be permitted to accompany him,” Morrell said of Obama. “We relayed those ground rules. They made a choice based upon the information we relayed to them. It was their choice. We had nothing to do with it.”

Has Obama ever visited the wounded stateside? You don’t have to go all the way to Germany to find injured soldiers to visit. President Bush and John McCain have been to see the wounded numerous times, with no fanfare.

But this fellow seems to have no idea what the right thing to do is. His handlers don’t either. Again, he demonstrates his manifest unfitness to be President of the United States.

Well, that’s a huge part of it. And I don’t think McCain is all that unwise lurking in the shadows, either.

John McCain is no orator. He’s not going to blow anyone away with his eloquence, incitefulness, or his charm. I think he’s kind of pulling the same low-key campaigning he used in the Republican primaries—just hoping to swoop in and steal the prize at the last minute from over-exposure and weariness of his competition. I don’t know if that’s the intended strategy or not, but having McCain making grand speeches like these of Obama would be a bad idea.

So many liberals fail to recognize what you so succinctly stated. You can't say you support men and women who willingly enter a mission knowing full-well what they're getting into by opposing everything they stand for. Everyone in Iraq now is there knowing what their future assignment was going to be. At this point, opposing the war means you oppose what motivated these soldiers to enter the fray in the first place. You can't say you support the troops when you make a mockery of their chosen mission.

“Hello everyone,

As you know I am not a very political person.
I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram, Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to “The War Zone.
I want to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram
As Soldiers lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with
weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.
So really he was just here to make a showing for the American’s back home that he is their candidate for President.
I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.
I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States.
I just don’t understand how anyone would want him to be our
Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.
If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry, but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is.
What you see in the news is all fake.”

Above is a letter from a serviceman
I think it says it all!

I heard this morning that Barack himself has been to Walter Reed to visit wounded vets without cameras. If true, I give him credit for it. But when he thought the cameras mattered, we see where his allegiance was. Perception over substance for him. Personally, I think this tour was a disaster. But he could chance it because he knows the media is for him. But the nasty truth is that with the alternative media today, even the MSM has resort to the truth rather than be outed. Their numbers are slipping and they want to keep their jobs.

Maybe he would only visit UN troops as Citizen of the World. This snub confirms his low opinion of our brave fighting men. The mask is gone Mr. Obama. He couldn’t bring reporters and camera so he didn’t go. Its all about him and getting elected—not about giving some wounded GI Jane or GI Joe a little Hope and Change or at least a smile or two.

Given that your post 22 is all correct info, it would still indicate that the Obama campaign missed a golden opportunity to promote their candidate, w/o actually promoting him. By that I mean he should have gone to the hospital, kept the media outside, as he went in, then when he came out he could have given a glowing speech:

"My visit to these brave soldiers was a private moment, one not intended to be a political photo op. These men and women have risked their lives for all of us and I just wanted to thank them... yadda... yadda... yadda."

They blew it, and I am glad they did!!
