Two women claim in a lawsuit that a Michigan McDonald's refused to hire them because they wear the hijab, or Muslim headscarf.
Toi Whitfield of Detroit and Quiana Pugh of Dearborn say they were both told by managers at a McDonald's in Dearborn they would have to take off their hijabs to work, the Detroit Free Press reports. They filed a discrimination lawsuit Thursday in Detroit.
The Detroit area has one of the biggest Muslim communities in the United States, and the Dearborn McDonald's is one of only two restaurants in the chain that serves halal Chicken McNuggets that meet Muslim religious standards.
They'll take Muslim dollars, but won't hire Muslim female employees, said Dawud Walid, head of the Council on American Islamic Relations in Michigan.
The suit named McDonald's, the management company at the Dearborn store and the manager who allegedly refused to hire the two women.
A spokeswoman said the management company has a strict non-discrimination policy.
I agree that it's confusing and inconsistent --let McDonald's make it policy to refuse muslim dollars, by all means...
Damn if you do and damn if you don't...
Now suppose the manager was a freakin' idiot and hired those two females with headgear... and suppose their headgear got caught in the french fry fryer... and the hot oil spilled on them...
How many of you would say that those women wouldn't sue McDonald's for creating a dangerous work environment?
And secondly... are those head gear sanitary? I am not sure I want to eat food prepared by someone with filthy turbans...
They'll pitch a fit if you refuse to serve them. I propose that they simply start putting bacon on everything on the menu. Lots of bacon.
muslims dollars? Are they paying in Saudi dinars or american dollars. If they are paying in american dollars, than its A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N dollars, not muslim dollars.
Then again, are we really shocked by any of this? The takeover is in its more advanced stages in europe, but this is all how it began.

We need tort reform so that when these women lose they pay McDonald’s legal expenses.
I thought these muslim women couldn’t go anywhere without a male relative. How could they work? Isn’t against their religion? Specially the ones who wear the hijab(sp?).
Gee, I can see many lawsuits in the future of McDonalds if this idea catches on.
The Musies are using our legal system to subvert us, and they are well on their way to success. As long our courts are willing to kowtow to their arguments, and are afraid to protect our constitutional rights as Americans … we will lose.
Both are African-Americans born in the USA of course. Toi Whitfield is on face book. Nothing against these young women but..... could it be a deliberate ploy for damages?.
I would venture conditions would be well nigh intolerable for any heavily clad woman - unless they were at the counter.
MacDonald’s may have set themselves up for this by having a hitory of caving in to demands by intentional victims.
If hired, they’d no doubt sue because they would have to make a Sausage McGriddle.
Doesn’t McDonald’s have a dress code? They should be free to set whatever dress code they want. It’s for the potential employees to meet the rules. They should tell CAIR to go pound sand.
In the US, hijab is worn merely as an “in your face” political statement.
How can they serve a customer who wants hotcakes and sausage, or an egg Mcmuffin? Doesn’t that violate their religion?

Michigan is not a “right to work” state. They have “no right to work.” They have no right to be hired.
