MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia announced plans on Sunday to revive its once-mighty navy by building several aircraft carriers and upgrading its fleet of nuclear submarines in the coming years.
Russia's power at sea is a shadow of the formidable Soviet navy which challenged U.S. military dominance in the Cold War. But, with a strong economy now from booming oil exports, it is seeking to raise its profile on the world stage by modernizing the armed forces.
Russia will build five or six aircraft carrier battle groups in the near future, RIA news agency quoted Navy Commander Vladimir Vysotsky as telling Navy Day festivities in St Petersburg, the second city.

Where are they going to base them? All of their ports get iced over at some point.
Unless they plan on basing them in Syria.
Venezuela and Cuba
OK, they are going to start building in 2012, maybe have one or two ready for sea by 2015 if it’s a crash program and they are willing to hire a lot of foreigners who actually know what they’re doing...
Then say a year to work up an airgroup...
I don’t think I’ll panic quite yet.
Global warming will take care of that.
Those new Russian ships wikll need glass bottoms so the crew will be able to see where to park those hulks down at Davy Jones Deep Sea Parking Lot.
CIA Factbook World Economic Rankings:
8 United Kingdom $ 2,137,000,000,000
9 Russia $ 2,088,000,000,000
10 France $ 2,047,000,000,000
11 Brazil $ 1,836,000,000,000
Bluff. Full sized carriers are expensive. The UK is straining hard to build two carriers. France may be able to afford one new carrier. Five Russian carriers? I doubt it when a third of the budget is stolen by Putin’s oligarchs. Small aviation cruisers pretending to be carriers like the Moskova perhaps.

I have never seen a picture with aircraft on their flightdeck of carriers they have built.
That’s because it’s not easy landing a MiG on a carrier deck with a snootful of vodka, LOL
Now you have.
Unless they plan on basing them in Syria.
For every 3 Russians born, 4 Russians die. Their year classes are getting too small to support the army they already have, and they're going to siphon off men for a bigger navy? Fat chance the generals will look kindly on that.
Thanks
You obviously don't understand about Russian carriers... ;-)
Here we see the typical Russian carrier (Varyag) projecting its immense power through Turkey's Dardanelles straight.
Notice the latest in high-technology propulsion unit, also illustrated below:
Using it's advanced propulsion, the Varyag achieved average sustained speeds of 6 knots for over 15,000 miles!
So, be afraid. Be very afraid...
