Obama won't pick VP for 'funeral duty'

From correspondents in Washington

July 28, 2008 05:42am Article from: Agence France-Presse

DEMOCRATIC White House hopeful Barack Obama said today he will pick a vice-presidential running mate who will "help me govern" and not just somebody "who I send off to go to funerals".

Obama, in an interview with NBC's Meet the Press, said his vice-presidential choice would be "somebody who can help me govern, who I can work with, who has a shared vision".

"I'm not interested in a vice president who I send off to go to funerals," he said. "I want somebody who is going to roll up their sleeves and be willing to work."

The only VP I can remember that was “Only sent to funerals” was Al Gore. The Clinton’s did not want to share the fame with any one else. VP Cheney is a hands on man for sure, so what is OBama talking about?

I think he needs to name his VP tomorrow morning to blunt this bounce Obama may be getting. If I were him, I too, would choose Palin as VP, or perhaps another strong, conservative woman for the position.

I think it would change this race instantly in McCain’s favor and would add some excitement into his campaign. But if he’s going to do it, he needs to do so before Obama beats him to the punch.

I can't think of anyone McCain can pick who would have as much voter appeal as Hitlery does for the dims.

Actually one could argue that that would be why McCain would pick Hillary!™ for a running mate.

He wants someone who will make him look like a moderate
Someone who will appeal to women voters
Someone who can steal democrat votes from Obama
He wants to be bi-partisain, and "reach across the Aisle

The scary thing is that if McCain did select Hillary, I think they’d probably win 40+ states...

I’m with you, I doubt it will be Hillary. There’s not room in the entire White House for all the baggage she and hubby will bring along with them.

We can’t be 100 percent sure Obambi will even be the dem candidate. I’m betting Mrs. Billy Clinton’s got something planned.

Jimminies! I didn’t know I was this politically ignorant. I haven’t a clue who Palin or Portman are. Don’t care much for Romney being on the ticket—with both him and McCain as our choice, I think Conservatives lose big time. Ridge might be okay—though I don’t know as much about him as I should, I guess.

True, but I don't find that quite as scary as the thought that he just might really select her!

You can take that to the bank. Whether she can pull it off or not is another thing but you can bank that she will be planning, plotting, and scheming to after inaugration day.

At this point in time the most plausible choice for Obama is Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana

“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.”

His campaign announced this past week that McCain will pick his running mate soon, before the start of the Olympics, they want to maximize the effect of the choice, they don’t want it drowned out by the media’s coverage of the Beijing Games.

You and I are two of a very small number on this Forum that likes Ridge. Ridge stated earlier this year on Fox News that if McCain asked him to take the pro life pledge ,similar to the one that GHWB took at Reagan’s insistence in 1980, he would do so. I like Sarah Palin, Ridge and Romney in that order. I really hope McCain picks Sarah and shakes things up.

Bill Kristol told the FNS Panel that Barry will announce soon, too...before he goes on vacation. Little Barry needs a vacation after his trip to summer camp.

"This does NOT say Hillary’s on his “short list.”"

From the article,

"The Illinois senator declined to name any possible running mates, but repeated that his rival for the Democratic nomination, former first lady Hillary Clinton, would be on his "short list"."
