BREITBART: Blacklist then and now

Andrew Breitbart

Monday, July 28, 2008

IXTAPA, Mexico — "There is no such thing as a blacklist anymore," George Clooney declared in 2005 while promoting his black-and-white hagiography of Edward R. Murrow, "Good Night, And Good Luck."

One eternally optimistic showman who has endured the Red Scare as well as the current Hollywood political disorder (let's not call it the "b-word" and upset Rosemary Clooney's nephew) is actor-raconteur - and my father-in-law - Orson Bean, who last week took our entire family to Mexico for his 80th birthday.

Orson was the young, hot comic on "The Ed Sullivan Show" when Mr. Sullivan told him he could no longer perform on the show owing to his 1956 outing in the anti-Commie newsletter, Red Channels. Today, Orson is a conservative Republican and once again on the wrong side of the censors.

Timing is everything.

Always enjoyed Orson Bean, and glad to hear he’s doing well at 80.

Thanks for the post!

Wow, he’s Andrew Breitbart’s father in law and he’s a conservative Republican.

I am thinking of an exchange when Governor Reagan was asked about having made mistakes and without hesitation he agreed that he had as he’d been a Democrat in the past.

Most of my neighbors here in Hellywood are in the industry. #1 rule for rightwing workers in the industry: keep your mouth shut. It’s been long established in Hollywood Republican circles that you can do damage from within the blue circles if you go up the food chain quietly.

I didn’t know Bruce Willis had a bar.

Next time I’m in NYC I’ll go to it. Maybe some local FReepers could hang out there some time.

Liberals only believe in free speech for those who agree with tehm.

And whatever George Clooney says should be presumed to be lie.

Timing is everything.

This is a great article and a great reminder that intelligent people do mature and see things more clearly as they age. Frank Sinatra is another example of what time can do, if one pays attention.

Sad to say, but time won't do anything for the likes of G. cLooney, Babbling Streisand, etc.. These overwrought, hand wringing Lefties- living in the midst of plenty- just can't care enough about the the great unwashed masses who buy tickets at outrageous prices to watch them "perform." I chalk it up to guilty consciences.

"There is no such thing as a blacklist anymore," George Clooney declared in 2005...

Of course not! You don't need a list, just favor every liberal you encounter and ignore the rest.

List... Hmmmph... Amateurs.

Orson Welles got his start with a radio program “War of the Worlds”. Listeners didn’t realize that it was a play and they were understandably distressed.

We've rented DVD’s of the old Moonlighting TV series. They've worn pretty well. They liked doing unconventional things. One episode was a flashback to the 40’s done in black and white. Orson Welles introduced it in a witty intro to let people know nothing was wrong with their sets. They said they just called him out of the blue and he said yes. The weird part is he died within the week he taped that.

Bean’s still working, too. He had a memorable appearance on The Closer last season.

There has always been a left-wing blacklist in the areas they control. In the 1930s and 1940s, the publishing industry was full of Communists and their sympathizers, and because of it, many books unfavorable to the Soviet Union struggled to find a publisher, among them Trotysky’s biography of Stalin and George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
