Online Sellers Face New IRS Rules (Attn Paypal users)
The Wall Street Journal (excerpt, subscription) ^ | July 30, 2008 | Martin Vaughn

Excerpt -

If you regularly sell items on online auction sites, you may find yourself on the Internal Revenue Service's radar. Recent legislation aims to help the IRS collect more taxes from online enterprises, many of which either don't know about their tax obligations or are ignoring them, according to the agency.

The provision, part of the housing rescue package that President George W. Bush is expected to sign within days, will require PayPal and other processors of online payments to report annual gross receipts to the IRS for all but the smallest online merchants.

Then I’m switching to Google Checkout.

I’ve always assumed that both PayPal and eBay share all of their records with the IRS, and probably any other entity that wants them.

The smallest e-bay merchants? Knowing the IRS that means less than $10/yr.

Do you think Google Checkout won’t be subject to the same reporting requirements? This covers a type of payment processor, not specific companies.

There was another thread on this earlier. I thought that the conclusion was this was taken out of the final bill,

I’ve quit selling on ebay anyway. Everytime they make policy changes & new rules - it favors the buyer, not the seller. I know several people that have had their Paypal funds frozen because of a complaint from a buyer. They didn’t even try to get the seller’s side of the story first.

Won’t that also apply to Google Checkout?

And how will that help. I’ve heard the fannie mae rescue bill included reports of all credit card activities.

Soon Congress will be taxing us on every sheet of toilet paper. I’ll gladly salute them with every sheet used in their honor. Flush twice to reach the hallowed halls of DC.

Just makes you feel all warm and cozy to know the government’s primary objective is to separate you from your money, and give it to you from the rear while they’re at it.

This doesn’t seem as bad as has been floated. If you are selling 10k a year on line and aren’t reporting it or claiming deductions then I can’t see griping about it. You should be doing all that anyway.

Now I also am very anti tax, but that is a separate debate. This isn’t any different than enforcing the same laws that have always been.

10k a year selling online is more than just yardselling, its an actual business.

Yes, President Bush will likely sign it tomorrow from what I'm hearing.

This is the first I've heard of it. I'm reserving judgement until I can study it more, but I don't like how it was enacted as part of the housing bailout. What other surprises are hidden in that legislation?

I need to issue a mea culpa. I finally DID find the provision in the housing bill. Here is the section in detail:

`SEC. 6050W. RETURNS RELATING TO PAYMENTS MADE IN SETTLEMENT OF PAYMENT CARD AND THIRD PARTY NETWORK TRANSACTIONS.
