One way this subject is obfuscated is by taking the law given by Moses out of context. The law could not change the heart. Polygamy, unbiblical divorce etc. were found among the people. The law regulated what was sinful behavior so as to restrict it. Regulating something is not a sanctioning of it. Jesus'commentary on divorce illustrates this when he says, "Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered (tolerated or endured)..." He then adds "but from the beginning it was not so." Matt. 19:8.

But what you said is very true & something that I've been thinking for a while. Thank you for putting it so clearly.
