'McCain Should Be Dancing on Ted Stevens's Political Grave'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 07/30/2008 6:19:47 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Chuck Todd has some advice for John McCain: embrace Ted Stevens' demise. The NBC News political director made his suggestion in the course of kibitzing McCain campaign strategy with Joe Scarborough on today's Morning Joe.

CHUCK TODD: Joe, why isn't McCain jumping on this Ted Stevens thing? He hated Ted Stevens.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: He did!

TODD: He should be dancing on this guy's political grave today. This is the John McCain Republican party versus the Ted Stevens Republican party. And he ought to be, he ought to be gloating today. And he's not touched it.

I’d say it’s a trap for McCain. Nothing really to benefit from saying anything, really. This election is about McCain and Obama; not Ted Stevens.

Political corruption has been perfected to a fine art by the Democratic party - commentators marvel at their finesse.

The Republicans don’t tolerate crooks in their midst — the Rats celebrate theirs!

I agree.

If I were McCain I’d want to stay on message about energy issues.

Stevens isn’t in this race.

I think from McCain's point of view there is no point in antagonizing the entire state of Alaska. Even if they might be tired of him no one likes to see it piled on when shame is brought to your state.

Also it looks like Stevens is on the way out. There are several ways he can go out. Why would McCain jump all over it with glee and tempt the guy to exit in a way (or hang around), in a way that would damage McCain's national efforts.

These guys are kinda’ dumb for not pointing this out on a POLITICAL morning discussion.

Correct. McCain only associates himself by mentioning Stevens. Stevens dug his own grave.

Should McCain slam Stevens?

I keep an eye on the Senate (which, by the way, has become as difficult and disgusting as watching the antics of the MSM), and observed Stevens' meltdown over the attack on his "bridge" in real time. He is a disgrace.

However, he has not been convicted of these charges so the best course, I would think, is to stick with the old, and oft ignored, principle of innocent until proven guilty

This is the John McCain Republican party versus the Ted Stevens Republican party.

That's pretty sad. The overwelming number of Republicans are neither McCain nor Stevens Republicans.

Kicking a guy when he’s down is pretty classless. Let the wheels of justice take care of Stevens.

I have a question for you Sen Obama. Didn’t Rezko actually buy part of your house for you and how is that different than Sen Stevens having his house improvements paid for by a currupt contractor? HMMMMMMM

Kicking a guy when he’s down is pretty classless.

Which is why it's No. 3 in the Democrat Playbook. Right behind "It's Bush's Fault!" and "Halliburton."

I suspect that Stevens’ indictment has more to do with Democrats in the U.S. Attorney’s office using their position for political purposes than it does with Stevens’ corruption. Consider that his indictment comes down three months before he’s up for re-election.

If that’s true they’re being aided and abetted by the Bush administration’s Justice Department. A Bush appointee as Acting Deputy Attorney General held the press conference yesterday and he gloated about the great work done by the FBI and the federal prosecuters in bringing the indictments against Senator Stevens. Its a clear case of eating their own.
