MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Half-year figures are expected to show the first sustained decline on record in remittances sent home by Mexicans working abroad, officials said. The downturn in U.S. housing construction and stepped-up immigration raids have made it tougher for migrants to find jobs, and less able to send money home. Mexico's Central Bank is scheduled to release figures on the remittance flow on Wednesday.

Annual remittances nearly tripled from about US$9 billion in 2001 to almost US$24 billion in 2007, amid improved reporting methods and swelling immigration. That's funny. Nobody cared when American citizens were forced out of those jobs.

Money sent home by Mexican migrants is the country's second-largest legal source of foreign income, after oil exports Hmm, since much of this money is earned by illegals (which makes it "illegal" money in my book), is it truly a "legal" source of income?
I am assuming that drug money from the US is not considered legal foreign income because the money is acquired illegally. So what makes funds from illegal aliens legitimate??? Notice the story refers to the senders as "migrants".

Only if they are going home for lack of employment and not jumping to more illegal activities (theft, robbery) or further draining our system (collecting welfare, workfare spots).

I see a bailout program in the works........ No kidding. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the treasury sent Mexico a check to cover the shortfall!
