He’s So Klavan - The Right side of Hollywood
National Review ^ | 7-31-08 | Mark Heminway

If you’re one of the few conservatives in Hollywood, you might be used to keeping your head down — and your politics to yourself — and hoping for the best.

There are some signs that things are looking up for Hollywood conservatives, however.

Revered playwright and screenwriter David Mamet recently published a sprawling essay in the Village Voice explaining, “Why I Am No Longer a ‘Brain-Dead Liberal.’”

And Robert Downey Jr., the formerly troubled actor turned smash success with the summer blockbuster Iron Man, recently outed himself as, well, something other than a liberal.

“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here,” Downey says. “But you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t.

I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.”

The Washington Times also recently highlighted a loose-knit group of conservatives and centrists that has quietly been gathering in private homes and restaurants, organized by Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise.

Of course, one or two positive moves in the direction of ideological diversity isn’t about to make a dent in Tinseltown’s near-uniform politics.

Just ask Edgar Award-winning crime novelist and screenwriter Andrew Klavan, who’s had books and screenplays made into movies by Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas, among others.

He’s one of the few people in Hollywood who’s managed to succeed while openly espousing his conservative politics.

“I’m a real loud-mouth. Especially after they started making films against the war effort,” Klavan told NRO .. “I thought it was the wrong thing to do while our guys were in danger, ...."

I just found your posts...and I am VERY happy and really surprised by the news that Jolie is not a libbie! I guess I just assumed...and I must apologize! I wish the conservative celebrities were as activist and outspoken for the conservative (well, sort of) candidate as the lib ones are for the Marxist one!

Star...that clip of Jon Voight was great! :D I had a crush on him too! :D

Thanks for the ping to your post. I appreciate the additional information. I think this is great.

It now up to the public to reinforce this by writing reasoned letters to let producers know we’re sick of seeing our nation, troops, and leaders trashed by the leftist media.

Some of us out here do love our nation, and do not see it as the pariah of nation states, that others do. Enough already.

If anyone ever has the opportunity, I HIGHLY recommend catching a performance of GS and the Lt Dan Band. They recently played at RAF Mildenhall, UK.

We’re military so we move every 2-3 years. We’re currently in Las Vegas. One thing is for sure, I’ve never lived anywhere (and I’ve lived in 8 states and 1 foreign country) where customer service is so terrible. Way too many people here are not simply unfriendly, but intentionally confrontational. The latest example.....I’m going through McDonald’s a few weeks ago and ordered one happy meal for my daughter. When the lady through the speaker spoke, I struggled to make out what she was saying. I could see the one happy meal on the screen so just assumed everything was correct. I go to pay and was charged $10 something. So I very nicely pointed out that one happy meal couldn’t have been $10. A man (who I later find out was the assistant manager), comes to the window and says in the most snide tone “didn’t you think something might have been wrong when you were told what the total came to at the screen”. Still being nice, I said “I couldn’t make out what the lady was saying and I only saw one happy meal on the screen”. He then rolled his eyes and said “Okay”. So I told him I would be calling the manager and he said “fine, you do that”. So when I got home I called and raised hell with the manager and he promised me there would be disciplinary action.

And this is only one of many, many examples of customer service where they are actually going out of their way to be confrontational. I can only be pushed so far and then I let loose and lose my temper with people like that.
