Anthony's "Rotten Pizza Theory" Tested By Eyewitness News

One of the biggest clues detectives have in the case of missing 2-year-old Caylee Anthony is a foul stench in the trunk of the car her mother, Casey, was driving. The family claimed the stench wasn't caused by Caylee's body, but instead by a rotted pizza.

Eyewitness News has had plenty of viewers question how an old pizza could be confused with a decomposing body. Caylee's grandmother said that the car didn't smell of death, but instead rotting pizza in the trunk. So, Eyewitness News decided leave one in a car to see what happened.

It's not the most scientific experiment, but it might shed light on the validity of the "rotting pizza theory." Eyewitness News took a basic Domino's Meatzza pizza and put the leftovers inside a locked car in the Florida sun.

"It smells like there was a dead body in the damn car," Cindy Anthony told a 911 dispatcher in a call to turn in her daughter.

A detective told prosecutors he smelled it, too.

"The evidence of decomposition would lead you to believe, would it not, that there is the possibility that this child is no longer alive?" the prosecutor asked Det. Yuri Melich.

"Yes, that can be concluded," he said during court room testimony.

"How do you deal with what they're saying about in the trunk of the car?" Eyewitness News later asked Cindy Anthony.

"There was a bag of pizza for like 12 days in the trunk of the car full of maggots. It stunk so bad, you know how hot it's been," she said.

But the Eyewitness News experiment doesn't support the smelly pizza theory after temperatures in the 90s. After seven days, the moisture was gone from the pizza and it had the consistency of shoe leather. More importantly, you have to get really close to smell anything and, when you do, the smell is pizza.

Channel 9 managing editor Joel Davis volunteered his car for the experiment.

"About every other day I've taken a look at it. The first day or two, you open the trunk and you have the smell of pizza. But after that, nothing," he said. "No smell whatsoever."

Detectives also said two cadaver dogs alerted on the trunk of the car Casey allegedly stole from her parents. Cindy Anthony said the pizza was in the car for 12 days, so Eyewitness News will revisit the pizza again in five days.

An old pizza flattens out and loses sharp oder as it gets older. If I remember my college days correctly.

I smelled a two day old body before and it wasn't close to the pizza.

A pizza in the trunk probably wouldn’t have had maggots on it, either.

Yeah, the flies unlocked the trunk to get to it.

Hate to admit this but I could, from first hand experience, attest that after several months under the seat of a car, a pizza just dries out.... It's a little tough and the flavor is gone but it's nothing Tabasco won't fix. (kidding)

Um....can’t the cops test the car for DNA? IF there was rotting flesh in the car, there would still be body fluids in the carpets. Where is the car? Don’t the cops have the rotten pizza and such?

They left off the anchovies!

Heck, the anchovies contaminate the damn Pizza when its FRESH out of of the oven!!! Not only that, the damn anchovies contaminate the ENTIRE oven !!!

Earlier this year I had to order a Pizza delivery for my Dad and me, after taking him to the eye-doctor for a macular degeneration injection ... he loves anchovies, I always say that they completely contaminate everything around them ... what the heck, for my Dad, I ordered a 1/4 pie of anchovies with the rest of the (3/4 pie) put in a separate box for delivery ... heck, I even asked for a separate vehicle to deliver the anchovie slices, but the Pizzaria wouldn't do that (/laughs)

As it turned out, the anchovie slices *were* delivered in a separate box, but not in a separate vehicle ....

Oh well, I did it for my Dad .... I'm a good Son ;)

The Mom and the Grandma appear to be liars. Daughter probably told Mom the baby’s death was an accident, so Mom is covering for her.

Sick women, and Mom is starting to look as bad as the daughter.

If you leave any kind of pizza sitting around, it will turn to stone in about two days.

Besides the trunk, the other thing that stinks is this lame-ass excuse.

You have to wonder what Grandma is going to think after she sees the complete photo album.

She’s gonna have to face it, a mother who had just lost her precious daughter in an accident would not be acting like that.

Any meat, even that of a pizza, is going to smell like a dead body after a time. It decomposes just like humans do. If it was a meat pizza, as the article suggests, then there would be no difference in the smell of the decomposed pizza than there would be of a decomposed human. Smell alone is not a very reliable test!
