OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the XXIX Olympic Games taking place from August 8 to 24 in Beijing:

"I am joined by all Canadians in wishing our athletes and their coaches the very best during their upcoming competitions. You are an enormous source of pride and inspiration for all Canadians and we salute your perseverance and dedication in your quest for excellence.

Canadians recognize and admire the years of effort involved in preparing for Olympic Games. From the playground to the podium, the values we learn from sport – teamwork, discipline, achievement and confidence – are values that make a society and a country stronger.

The Government of Canada is a proud partner in supporting excellence in sport. As the world comes together in Beijing to reach for one dream, we want you to know that we are following with great pride and excitement your performances at these Games.

From September 6 to 17, Canada’s paralympians will also inspire Canadians as they compete in the XIII Summer Paralympic Games. We look forward to conveying our support to these exceptional athletes."

Yes I noticed what he did not say. I am assuming he did not go to the opening ceremony like others we know.

I saw Canadian athletes at the Toronto airport early this week preparing to head out for the Games. Go Canada!

I wouldn’t want to be in Beijing without a respirator....... especially if I were engaging in severe athletic endeavors.....

We have illegals all over the country.

It’s called Canada’s refuge policy.
A left over from the Liberal rule.

Set foot on our soil, and you get every ‘right’ due to a Canadian, if you claim refugee status.
2-5 years later, we might actually deport you. If we can find you.

:-(

Sorry, this thread is about “putting it to the Chi-Coms”.
I went off topic.

I deal with suppliers who travel to China for weeks at a time, twice a year.

I can’t imagine doing it myself.

The illegal pictures from North Korea show clearer skies than Bejing could hope for.

The day after the Olympics are over, the factories will re-open, and all their coal burning will resume.

One day, when they do open up, we will find a disaster worse than what was discovered in Russia, in the 90’s.

They never should have given the Olympics to China.

It’s called Canada’s refuge policy.

Funny. I first read that as "refuse."

Sigh.

It would help if I had typed ‘refugee’ correctly, the first time.

You are correct. He sent a Cabinet Minister to represent us, kinda like the USA “honouring” foreign dignitaries by sending the Vice President.

True.

In the winter competitions, our biggest threat comes from the Jamaican Bob-sled team.
