Reparations By Another Name (IBD Series: The Audacity Of Socialism)
IBD Editorials ^ | August 8, 2008

Posted on 08/08/2008 5:22:37 PM PDT by Kaslin

Election '08: Barack Obama says Washington shouldn't just offer apologies for slavery, but also "deeds." Don't worry, he says, he's not talking about direct reparations. Relieved? Don't be.

'I consistently believe that when it comes to . . . reparations," Obama recently told a gathering of minority journalists, "the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds."

A few days later, he clarified his remarks, saying he's not calling for direct cash payments to descendents of slaves, but rather indirect aid in the form of government programs that will "close the gap" between what he sees as white America and black America.

He says government should offer "universal" programs — such as universal health care, universal mortgage credits, college tuition, job training and even universal 401(k)s — that "disproportionately affect people of color."

In other words, reparations by another name.

Obama knows that if he pushes too hard on reparations, he might scare off white voters. So he couches race-specific welfare as "universal" social programs that appeal to broad-based political coalitions — "even if they disproportionately help minorities," he confides in his book, "Audacity of Hope."

i don’t think that’s going over very big.

he could lose the election over this one.

affirmative action in universities and employment were deemed at initiation as recognition and correction of the problem.

OK, so lets say Obama and congress manage to pass a reparations bill. X amount of tax payer money goes directly to each and every African American family in the US on a larger legalized extortion relief plan that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be angry they were not at the forefront. Some of the guilty white folk feel relieved, and many are angry, So in turn the free monies are spent on luxes items which we know many will do. Now the smoke has cleared, no money is left and the families are in the same situation they started in. Obama and congress could care less, they are heroes and another large bureaucratic black hole is created like social security, medicare, possibly national healthcare and welfare for the liberal skunks and thier dependents to suckle from. not far fronm the truth hey?

“A few days later, he clarified his remarks, saying he’s not calling for direct cash payments to descendents of slaves,...”

Direct cash payments are not what the proponents of reparations are calling for. They want government funding to be funneled to various organizations to counter the “lingering aspects of slavery”. IOW, reparations are government block grants to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and other ‘community organizers’.

Is he too stupid to see that the government is already spending hundreds of millions on these programs? How much money will it take for white America to be free from something that ended over a hundred years ago? Berry and other elitist slobs are saying that black people are inferior and unable to survive with handouts from white people.

I am quite certain that if reparations are enacted - that will be the "tipping point" for me and a lot of other patriots. I would certainly react to such nonsense in a manner that our government may not like.

This is ridiculous.
Slaves were entirely taken care of by someone else.
When freed, they were taken care of by the state through assistance.
The only way to completely become free is to become self sufficient, and that isn’t government programs, it’s depending upon yourself.

“The problems of inner-city poverty arise from our failure to face up to an often tragic past,” Obama said.

This is certainly debatable.

You could write a whole book on this very subject.

My 2 cents worth in a few words would be that our country passed various laws, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to ban discrimination in major areas of life. We also implemented affirmative action programs to remedy past discrimination, or at least that was the intent of those affirmative action policies.

So my open question would be, what more can we do to ensure equality of opportunity that we haven’t already done?

And what about the utter breakdown of the black family, to get to the point where about 70% of black babies are born out of wedlock? The big explosion in out of wedlock births, both among African-American and everyone else, happened after the civil rights movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s. You can’t blame the big rate of out of wedlock birth in the black community on past discrimination. The bad family situation so many black children are raised in has nothing to do with the tragic past that Obama says we haven’t faced up to.

Reparations has nothing to do with this...Obamas just knows that inner city blacks are easy marks and he will use them to further his own agenda of a socialist utopia. Look at any dictator, any revolutionary Che, Chavez, Morales, Castro, Hitler...they always turn to the uneducated poor to use in their dirty work. Demagoguery is an old trick. The man is despicable socialist scum.

And 50 years from enactment of reparations, another reparations bill, to compensate the victims for the evil effects of paying reparations!

great article on littlegreenfootballs about obama’s community activist days

Obama has set race relations back 50 years. Quotas, apologies, affirmative action, deeds not words provides a sense of entitlement for the african American community.
Sitting in the pews of a racist, American hating preacher doesnt help either.

Reparations is exactly what he has in mind.

"Now the smoke has cleared, no money is left and the families are in the same situation they started in.

That's not the end - but it is the end of the beginning.

Because then we will hear about the unfairness of the system because all the blacks born after the program went into effect got nothing.
So the New Freebies Program For Blacks will just go on and on and on.

It will not be a one shot program to pay off blacks today and they stop the whining.
It will just give them a taste for more.

It will never end. The demand for handouts will go on and on until the country is bankrupt.

Many years ago, Ebony magazine had an article title, “When Our Streets Were Safe.” It was about the time prior to the ‘60’s when Black neighborhoods were actually some of the safest places around. Wish I could find that article.

Let me make it clear right up front: I am NOT a racist. I supported Herman Cain in his run for the Senate. And if he ever runs again, I would probably support him again.

I also consider Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams two of the finest economists and minds extant today. In case you don’t know them, both are black.

Sowell, Williams and Cain – among others — have spoken out against those fellow blacks who castigate and vilify America for a slavery now long in our past. And ALL thinking men and women oppose the periodic calls for reparations.

The fact is that the modern descendants of slaves brought here in chains in admittedly miserable, soul-gutting conditions now calling for reparations need to remember something:

They should not only be glad to be in America, they should be glad to be ANYWHERE!

Had their ancestors NOT been brought OUT of Africa – many by Muslim slave raiders —the blood of those ancestors would have run into the earth over there several centuries ago, victims of the OTHER black tribes that captured them in one of the interminable tribal conflicts STILL ravaging that sad continent and these modern day would-be “plaintiffs” would not even exist.

And I would remind you that slavery is STILL practiced in parts of Africa (mainly by muslims) and Asia today.

95% of the African slaves who were transported across the Atlantic went to South and Central America, mainly to Portuguese, Spanish and French possessions, and that less than 5% of the slaves who crossed the Atlantic went to the United States, it was remarkable that the vast majority of academic research, films, books and articles concerning the slave trade concentrated only on the American involvement, as though slavery was a uniquely American aberration.

And should the great-great-great grandchildren of SLAVE OWNING BLACKS also be subject to PAYING these reparations? If so, how do we find THEM?

And I have traced MY family back to the SLAVS. For those who don’t know, that word means “slave.” Do I qualify for reparations? From whom??

The official US Census of 1830 lists 3,775 free blacks who owned 12,740 black slaves. Furthermore, the story outlines the history of slavery here, and the first slave owner, the Father of American slavery, was Mr Anthony Johnson, of Northampton, Virginia. His slave was John Casor, the first slave for life. Both were black Africans. The story is very readable, and outlines cases of free black women owning their husbands, free black parents selling their children into slavery to white owners, and absentee free black slave owners, who leased their slaves to plantation owners.
-”Selling Poor Steven”, American Heritage Magazine, Feb/Mar 1993 (Vol. 441) p 90

Of course, a full telling of Black History would not be complete without a telling of the origin of slavery in the Virginia colony:
Virginia, Guide to The Old Dominion, WPA Writers’ Program, Oxford University Press, NY, 1940, p. 378

And the holier-than-thou Northern liberals are strangely silent on recent archeological evidence from NEW YORK CITY clearly tracing the financing of the slave trade to NORTHERN BUSINESSMEN!!

At the height of his remarkable boxing career, Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay), once declared “I’m glad my great-grandpa got on that boat.”

And author Robert Hitt Neill tells of attending a Tennessee Mountain Writer’s Conference years ago with several other authors. Among them was Alex Hailey, celebrated author of “Roots.” Watching a TV news show, a group of them watched a demonstration in a Southern state against the “Rebel” flag incorporated into that state’s flag. The very next report covered a famine in Africa. Graphic images showed dead bodies, starving children with distended tummies and runny noses and dying people covered with flies, too weak to brush them away.

Mr. Hailey intoned in a low, serious voice, “Every time an American black sees a story like that, they should find a Confederate flag and kiss it.” He then pointed to the TV screen and continued, “Because these would be me and my descendants, except for American slavery. I thank God that my family and I are here instead of there.”

Next problem!

I am now convinced Obama is deliberately trying to divide America — as part of a revolutionary plan.

Even when he loses the election (let us pray)he’s going to say and do things that cause division, rather than unity, in the country.

The United States Government doesn’t “owe” black people anything.

And IF it EVER did... the Dept’s been paid in spades.
