Georgia's march into South Ossetia has prompted the Abkhazia to begin preparing for war as well. Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba told SPIEGEL ONLINE that his province might open up a second front.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: How is Abkhazia reacting to the events in South Ossetia?
Shamba: We have a deal with South Ossetia on how we will deal with crisis situations. And we are now planning on implementing it. Our security council met all night and ordered our army to deploy this morning to the Georgian border.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Will a second front now be opened in Abkhazia?
Shamba: That depends on how the situation in South Ossetia develops. We understand very well that we Abkhazians are next in line after South Ossetia. If the situation doesn't stabilize again, then we will have to open a second front.

Georgia made a big mistake, there is not NATO help, or sympathy, best scenario will eb where cease fire is established. Hopefully Russians will not level the whole place. The Georgians really have no chance.
this is getting really BAD!
Abkhazia and South Ossetia aren’t “breakaway provinces,” they’re the Russian government. Russia has been working to rip apart a democracy, US ally and strategic partner vital to America’s energy security. If the US abandons Georgia, it will be making a stupid mistake.
Hey Georgia! Thanks for helpin us out in Iraq and Aghanistan and all, but we we just don’t feel like helpin back,..we just sittin here watchin them Lympics through some Binokulars,......sucks to be you.
I am disgusted we treat our allies this way, what are the Georgians?..General Crook’s scouts?
Thats all very true, and Russians have been messing with Georgians for centuries.
But no one is going to send any military aid to Georgia and they cannot stop Russian 100/barrel oil military machine.
They are sc.ewed.
We have NO leaders, now we have no honor.
Bush is ridin out his last few months by recognizing Terrorist states , playin foostsie with Pyongyang like Condi is channeling Madelyn Nutbright, kiss-kiss in the rear view mirror with Pootie Poot, whistling past Iran and bowing and groveling with food and medicine poisoner China.
That Match Game background reminds me of the Confederate flag.
The question is whether or not Russia wants to repeat what it did to Hungary in 1956. The costs to Russia, of invading and conquering a neighboring state, will be pretty huge. I suppose their goal is scaring the hell out of the CIS, sending the message that the West won't risk a military confrontation in Russia's sphere.
Agreed. My armchair general staff theory is that Russia will take over the South Ossetia, if the Georgians stop firing at them they will stop. If not they will rock the place to no end.
Either way its a Russian show all the way.
Stalin was from Georgia, and IMO, Georgia has been part of Russia (USSR) for more than a century.
Wouldn't it be to our benefit to promote cooperation with Russia (~ 125 million) over Georgia ( ~10 million).
What's the difference between the 2 ?
How many countries sent troops to support us Iraq and Afghanistan ?
And don’t parse because of the number of Georgians, they sent 10% of their active army, no matter how many here like to denigrate their contribution.
I’m not expecting the bombing to begin in 10 minutes, but how about a little support. When did ya’ll all go so Russia’ee?
Tryin to cozy up to Russia is like tryin to pick up the clean end of a turd. But the fellow travelers can’t let go of that hope.
Russis kicks sand in our face at every opportunity (More properly Putin does).
The Georgians have supported us, to include sending troops to Iraq.
Indeed. Also, Georgia hasn’t been supporting Iran’s lust for nuclear weapons nor has it been supplying weapons to Iran and Syria. I am very curious as to which European powers respond and how; this is in their backyard.
I can't discuss this with you at your level. But I'll give you another chance. How many Georgians made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq? I don't really know. How many Russians died in the defeat of the Nazis? Then a few years latter they tore down the wall and the threw out the Communist system.
Surely, we should appreciate that and reciprocate. But no, we put troops in Georgia and missiles in Poland. If push comes to shove, we will have to back off, it just isn't worth our lives.
In all honesty, it's the other way around.
And your implication is that the Russians are? Sober up my friend.
OK, I’ve been lurking on this thread, but your post made me take notice. You asked: “How many Russians died in the defeat of the Nazis?” Would those be the same Nazis with whom the Russians had a nonagression pact, and against whom the Russians only fought when invaded by those Nazis?
And you statement “a few years later they tore down the wall and the threw out the Communist system,” really demands a response. Most people understand that it was the Russians who put up an iron curtain across Europe in the first place. Further, your reference to “the wall” most logically refers to the Berlin Wall, which was (1) put up by the Russian dominated East German Government and (2) was destroyed as the Russian influence over East Germany declined to the point that the East Germans did not interfere with German destruction of the wall.
What other theories do you have about European history? Any comments about how WWII wasn’t over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
The Russians weren’t on the right side of any of these conflicts, as, indeed, they are not on the right side of this conflict with Georgia. There may or may not be practical reasons that support of the Georgians, half a world away from the US mainland might be difficult. I’m not even sure that such support would even be all that difficult. Georgia is only a few hundred miles from US military forces in Iraq, and the blinding of air defense networks by US technology has already been demonstrated in many other settings; airdropping supplies into Georgia with plausible deniability could be as straighforward as military operations get, if the decision was made to conduct such airdrops.
Just a few thoughts.
