On adultery, Edwards cites McCain
Politico ^ | 8-8-08 | Ben Smith

The full version of Bob Woodruff's interview with John Edwards just aired on ABC, figuring Edwards alternately penitent, defensive, and dismissive of the tabloid reports that unearthed his affair.

He also, in explaining his view that his dalliance could remain private, cited Republican John McCain's reported affair at the end of his first marriage almost three decades ago.

"What I was thinking was this was something that was personal to my own family," Edwards said, citing other public figures having survived extramarital affairs. He recalled, he said, having heard "John Mccain talk about the mistakes that he’s made in his past with respect to his first marriage."

"I’m not the first person to do this," he said.

Edwards also heatedly denied that he's the father of Rielle Hunter's daughter, and explained his visit to see her in a Los Angeles hotel.

"I was there for a very simple reason – because I was trying to keep this mistake that I had made from becoming public," he said. "The bottom line was [Hunter's friend] said the purpose of the meeting was that she was having some trouble she just wanted to talk."

"Nothing was resolved – I didn’t talk to them about paying money or anything like that," he said.

He also distanced himself from a photograph that the National Enquirer said showed him holding Hunter's baby.

"I have absolutely no idea what that picture is," he said. "I have no idea who that baby is."

"Do you know how many pictures have been taken of me holding children in the last three years?" he asked Woodruff. "It happens all the time."

Oh no he didn't!!... What a SLEEZE. Lay the failings of your own marriage at the feet of John McCain? This guy is sick. On the eve that the world finds out about how he dishonored his wife, he tries to make a political dig? What a PIG!!!!!!!!!

A very calculated political dig to put the spotlight on McCain. Now the MSM, led by their Sunday shows, will go after McCain with all the vigor they didn’t go after Edwards with. And they’ll make sure to bring up other Republican dalliers like Gingrich and Bob Livingston plus the claims that Bush the Elder and W had dalliances of their own. Edwards? He’s in the clear now. He did his job and he’ll be rewarded.

"I’m not the first person to do this," he said.

So much for a contrite heart.

You know, the first name which comes to mind regarding serial adultery is not McCain, or Vitter, or Livingston, or other republican who have a history.....It is Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton. He is the definition of adultery.......but Edwards has McCain first come to mind, as a side-bar statement.

My God! This guy is one sick bastard. Just what the hell does McCain have to do with his infidelity? Did McCain chastise Edwards? Did McCain’s staff mention any of this?

I sure am not a fan of John McCain, but this fellow is really grasping at straws. No high road for a low life like this.

A true libdem--it's always someone else's fault, it's always "Well, HE/SHE did something wrong once, too!" or "Wow, I'm not perfect, geez!"

With Dems, their flaws are not sins, they're proof they're "just folks" like everyone else.

So why was he there in June? Did she need to ‘talk’ to him then too about some ‘issues’?

He is full of it and lying (again).

He owes the Klintoons one for this even if it can now be used as a weapon against McCain.

Edwards makes 6 figures to talk about the 2 America’s, and once a person realizes that, if they’re intellectually honest with themselves, they knew he was scum a long long time ago.

Much like my brother pointed out with his new idea for a bumper sticker:

“algore is just gonna take your carbon credits and spend it on jetfuel, stupid!”

Since Zell Miller retired and Joe Lieberman was run off, there’s not one single hypocrat I trust to lead a McDonald’s, not ONE!

As much as I detest McCain, Edwards is the equivalent of the 6th grade kid that would get his head beat in every day at school because he was a rat.

This is a typical scumbag lawyer who thinks he's better than everyone else, and continues to believe that in spite of evidence that he's an arrogant, unprincipled lout.

The press is still trying to smooth the waters on the story they didn't report. It's sickening.

I'm not either. What if all of the politicians attacked each other, and imploded!! We could start all over!

Translation: I'm not repentant......only sorry I got caught. He'll do it again if he thinks he can get away with it. His wife is a dunce if she thinks he won't.

I know a Dr. who has been married 5 times. Each divorce was due to infidelity.....and each woman he married seemed to think they could keep him from dallying his dinger. There are some really smart people out there who act very stupid.
