You staved off Mongolian conquest by aligning with them and being ruled by them for 200 years. While that was going on the Polish and Lithuanians fought to keep the Mongols out of Western Europe for most of that time.

Exactly. War were started by Aug08, 2008 georgian MLRSing on town Tskhinvall at night between 7th and 8th where thousands of Russian citizen lived. About 2000 were killed. Next day Aug 09 Russia deployed troops to defend those who left there and punish those responsible for the massacre.
This invasion into Georgia was set up years ago. Russia has been issuing European passports to So Ossetia and other Russian Sympathetic areas.
I do suspect, very strongly, the EU symbol in background was meant in satire.
