He put himSELF first. One phrase says it best: “Men do not refrain from cheating because they have special wives, but because they have a commitment to moral behavior and righteous action.”

In the old days we called it sin.

"Far from judging Edwards, my heart goes out to him. His is an American tragedy."

Typical liberal thought process. Ignore the facts and don't engage in any logical, objective analysis. Just go with the "feelings" and get all emotional.

Edwards is a real t*rd, just like der schliekmeister, Spitzer, et al. These guys are public figures. They have to know that they will be caught by some reporter trying to write his career story, and that when they are caught, their families will be, not just humiliated, but publicly humiliated.

They broke a promise they made to their spouses before G-d, but that’s between them and their G-d and their families, which doesn’t mean that they should still be elected to high office.

The worst of all this is that they publicly humiliate the families that they claim to love.

No American tragedy. John Edwards is solely responsible for his decisions every moment of every day. To deceive honest, hard-working Americans into believing you are something that you are not is contemptible. My contempt goes out to him. He is a low-life, scum-sucking idiot. He is also a liar, lawyer, former Senator, former Presidential candidate.

Character counts. Also, public figures are going to have to get smarter and study the success of men like Billy Graham. Graham listened to his advisors in the very beginning and adopted a rigid policy of never being alone with female workers around the office or on the road.

The truth is, some politicians regard groupies as part of the perks they are entitled to, like rock stars.

Take care, Michelle.

Having lost my wife to cancer a number of years ago when she was 28, I've discovered there are a LOT of women who embrace the edwards/clinton lifestyle of lying and cheating.

Some have even claimed to be conservative Christians but ultimately they expose themselves as typical liberals without any absolutes of values or morals.

So both men and women choose this lifestyle.

This kind of "why men (in this case Edwards) cheat" stuff is such bunk. He cheated because he willingly placed himself in a situation where cheating easily happened. Half of life, maybe more, is keeping yourself out of trouble by NOT putting yourself in situations where bad stuff can happen. Edwards sought out this affair and deserves zero sympathy.

Edwards has no character, and people with no character do hurtful and awful things to the ones they claim to love the most. They love themselves SO much more than anyone else.

Well SJackson, I have read and re-read your above statement several times hoping to find a glimmer of sarcasm or punditry in it somewhere. Sadly, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that you are actually sincere. Now, I have cause to be concerned about you and your mental health - unless of course you happen to be a liberal in which case I will just write your comment off to your stupidity...

“Moonstruck”

Rose Castorini: But why would a man need more than one woman?

Johnny Cammareri: I don’t know. Maybe because he fears death.

Rose Castorini: That’s it! That’s the reason!

Johnny Cammareri: I don’t know.

Rose Castorini: No, that’s really it. Thank you for
answering my question.

I think Edwards was actually speaking the truth when he said he began to feel he was special, that he could get away with it. I think it's called hubris.

As to why he wanted to cheat? I don't think it's any more complex than that he had an appetite for it. Maybe he was bored. Maybe it'd been a long time since he had any "strange," to put it in the street vernacular. Maybe his sense of hubris was the devil on his shoulder, whispering in his ear that he deserved it. "It" meaning sexual and emotional gratification. He was special. He had special needs.

When his appetite met no resistance, but instead was goaded by his hubristic sense of entitlement, voila. He acted. And the devil was right there waiting for him, with dark roots and I'm sure some saucy verbiage.

They met in a bar, supposedly. Tacky.

Anyway, this stuff oughta help keep some guys honest. Is it really worth destroying your life?
