Cheating on a Sick Spouse: John McCain. Then Newt Gingrich. And now John Edwards

Wronged Spouses Get Double Punch: Illness and Betrayal

John McCain. Then Newt Gingrich. And now John Edwards.

Though the affair will likely shatter the family, psychologists say Elizabeth Edwards is unlikely to leave her husband. She has too much "invested" in family and in political power. (ABC News Photo Illustration)Edwards' betrayal of his wife at her most vulnerable moment -- as a cancer patient -- is more common than conventional wisdom suggests, according to infidelity experts.

A mistress of former House Speaker Gingrich told Vanity Fair they had their tryst as his first wife recovered from uterine cancer surgery in the 1980s.

While McCain was married to his first wife, who was disabled from a car accident, he was "aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich," according to a New York Times colunmist's account of the 1970s incident that predated McCain's election to the Senate.

Both McCain and Gingrich have admitted to the affairs.

"It's not that uncommon for the spouse of a seriously ill person to commit adultery," said Anthony DeLorenzo, who, with his wife, founded infidelity.com. "The healthy spouse often feels guilty, lonely and helpless about the illness, and that combination can make a spouse more vulnerable to having an affair."

Sickness frequently interferes with or eliminates sex from a relationship, making a healthy spouse more vulnerable to advances or situations that lead to sex outside of marriage, the New Jersey private detective told ABCNews.com.

Blogs this week have been less sympathetic, calling Edwards and his extramarital sex with videographer Rielle Hunter "very low" and "depraved."

"Edwards claimed, while engaging in the affair, that Elizabeth was in remission," read one post on the site, the World According to Matt. "In short he is a cad."

Here we go!!!...

Edwards started this the other night when he said on Nightline the following:

...He (Sen. Edwards) also, in explaining his view that his dalliance could remain private, cited Republican John McCain's reported affair at the end of his first marriage almost three decades ago.

"What I was thinking was this was something that was personal to my own family," Edwards said, citing other public figures having survived extramarital affairs. He recalled, he said, having heard "John Mccain talk about the mistakes that he’s made in his past with respect to his first marriage."

"I’m not the first person to do this," he said...

If adultery were disqualifying, we’d have had few of our previous presidents. President Andrew Jackson was (unknowingly) a bigamist, President Kennedy was a serial adulterer and there have been rumors about nearly every president, as I’m sure you know. On the other hand, being surrounded with communists, terrorists, black seperatists, Nation of Islam and other racists has had to have an effect on Senator Obama, his denials to the contrary notwithstanding! I’d rather see a patriotic sinner in that office than an anti-American, racist socialist!

Of course, how could we forget all the bull about Thomas Jefferson sleeping with his slave and fathering a child with her.

That made bubba’s cheating on hitlery just fine, even tho Monica was nearly the same age as Chelsea.

Blech, the media is pimping for the dems. No surprise there.

Perfect analogy. Big media completely covered up both Newt’s and McCain’s shortcomings. </sarcasm>

I guess we should all be thankful, that John Edwards did not drive off a bridge in to a lake with Rielle Hunter in the car, then swim to shore, fake amnesia while Rielle Hunter gasped her last breath... Now where have I heard that story before? oh yes, some Cad on Cape Cod...I seem to remember.

This is one we have to expect and swallow. Like it or not, McCain did it. Better the media air it now than as their "November surprise."

If it wasn’t for the Paper of Record, The National Inquirer, we would have never heard about the last guy.

Read an editorial by Dowd today and she had the best comment - to paraphrase “when her cancer went into remission, so did their marriage” .

But, but...John Edwards said his wife was "in remission" during
his fling. So she wasn't really a sick spouse.
And he's a Democrat.
And "it's just about sex".

(I just love the Democrat-immunity rule for never really paying
a substantive price for extra-marital affairs!)

‘cited Republican John McCain's reported affair’

Wasn't McCain still in the military when he did this affair? Hello ol’ UCMJ. I guess he got a pass back then. Adulterers get passes, no big deal, right?

Again... it is less about the act and more about the LYING about it.

Newt and John both fessed up when caught. Clinton and Edwards both LIED.

Fatal flaws in both mens characters completely over looked by the fawning lame stream media.

Broad brush hit with wishful thinking.

McCain is on very good terms with first wife.

Newt and first wife. If the old story on this one was true, why has the relationship with their two daughters been very close to this day.

Little Johnny Edwards is a very different story

They leave out that his ex wife now supports him and she is the one that left him, not the other way around.

What a disgusting,self-serving,little creep.
