Private schools across the Washington region have begun to feel the effects of the nation's economic slumber, as some families seek more financial aid to help with staggering tuition bills and others simply opt out of paying for an education.

I knew private education was expensive - but these figures boggle the mind. One family quoted in the article reports spending 15k for each of their two children for a yearly tuition of 30k! Yeah, that's a hefty chunk of change!

Public Education Ping

This list is for intellectual discussion of articles and issues related to public education (including charter schools) from the preschool to university level. Items more appropriately placed on the “Naughty Teacher” list, “Another reason to Homeschool” list, or of a general public-school-bashing nature will not be pinged.

If you would like to be on or off this list, please freepmail Amelia, Gabz, Shag377, or SoftballMominVa

I wonder how much that “second income” is bringing in, after taxes, daycare, wardrobe, commuting, private school, etc

are taken into account.

Of course, the mother wouldn’t be “fullfilled” if she just stayed home with the kids and taught them herself.

The private school my BIL sends his kids to costs at least $20,000 a year. Of course he makes several hundred thousand a year and they don’t live beyond their means, so it’s not a big sweat for him.

I’ve noticed that the two best private schools in my area have been advertising for students this summer. They don’t usually have to do that.

A local private school is charging $20,000 per year for middle school.

Hard to fathom. Another nearby private high school is currently charging $28,000 for entering freshman and that amount will increase every year.

There are waiting lists at both schools.

This might explain why my husband and i, just this week, received an invitation to a cocktail party/fundraiser at Georgetown Visitation for parents of FORMER STUDENTS! LOL! my daughter graduated from Visitation in ‘07 and yeah i am still paying hefty tuition for my other 2 kids as well as college tuition for the former Visi student, there’s some chance we want to voluntarily contribute to Visitation!

It’s cheaper than public school - the city of Falls Church spends $26k per kid per year.

I am pretty sure that the Obamas send their kids to private schools. The last President to use public schools was Jimmy Carter. Not that a half-dozen Secret Service agents in the classsroom might have disrupted anything.

Public schools are just supposed to be for the hoi polloi -- you know, us "clingers".

Gotta love that free market!

One of the more pricey schools in Georgia is around Atlanta, where tuition runs 19K a year, per student. The teachers there make squat...barely enough to afford to live.

Ah well. I like my public school with all of its faults and nuances.

True. The small town I live in spends $10,000 for each public school student compared to less than $2000 for private schools.

That tuition is only for day school; boarding schools are at least double.

It would be nice to think that with the upper income families feeling the pinch to the point that they’d put their kids in public school, they will begin to demand that public schools improve.

Yeah, but private schools get to kick out the ones they don’t want - and public schools take all comers.

Tuition for our two kids this year will be $4480...for both. This doesn’t account for lunches or books (books and other fees were over $400 and they’re going to take their lunches 1-2 days/week this year). I am a SAHM, we have 4 kids, and we are not rich—we will have a third child starting school there in 2009. Yes, the parish subsidizes the school, but the cost per pupil is still less than the state average for public schools.

The school has a computer lab, Smart boards and all that, but they also have good discipline, no silly rules like no cupcakes on their birthdays, and excellent teachers (who make less than their public school counterparts). The pre-school is expanding this due to increased enrollment, and our son’s class has expanded from 39 to 44 students (their are two of each grade 1-6). Not too bad for ‘institutionalized’ kids. LOL

and private schools do not have the bureaucratic bloat that the public schools do.

“...and others simply opt out of paying for an education....”

The problem is, they ARE paying for an education. But, they’re not getting one from the National Education Association clowns. Personally, I’d fire anyone with an “education” degree and try a new concept; English teachers should have a degree in - wait for it - English. Science teachers should have a degree in.... - well, you get the idea.

patton lives in falls church where my kids went to catholic elementary school. while the falls church public school system is supposedly renowned [albeit demonstrably inefficient], there are parents standing outside of St James in the early dawn hours on registration day, hoping to get their kids in there. good for you Hoosier mom. Many of my peers started teaching at St James after their youngest started in school there. There is actually a PhD mom as the head of the science department there, who was a SAHM who went back to work teaching there when her youngest started school.

Nope they sure don’t. Private schools also don’t have to follow much of the bureaucratic nonsense that comes along with the public tax money. I would imagine that if private schools began taking millions of dollars, you’d see the administrations increase dramatically.

That’s why there are such things as private and public schools, i suppose. Those of us who are paying tuition are paying not to have that nonsense.
