Evidence in Georgia Belies Russia's Claims of 'Genocide' (Russia lies and bullies way into Georgia)
wall street journal ^ | 8/15/2008 | ANDREW OSBORN in Tskhinvali, Georgia, and JEANNE WHALEN

Russia's assertions that it was provoked into war by "genocide" in South Ossetia and that it is observing a cease-fire in Georgia came under new challenge Thursday, as the U.S. stepped up diplomatic pressure on Moscow.

Washington agreed to base missile interceptors on Polish soil, in a new sign of how Russia's invasion of Georgia is redrawing the geopolitical map.

On the ground in South Ossetia -- the contested region where fighting broke out last week between Georgia and Russia -- there was little evidence that Georgian attacks killed thousands of civilians, as Russia has said. Doctors said they had treated a few hundred people and one cited a confirmed death toll in the dozens.

Will all the Putin apologists who have parroted the '2,000 dead Ossetians' on FR over the last few days as a rationale for the Russian attack offer up any mea culpas?

I sure as heck ain't holding my breath waiting...

The New Soviet Era apologist will just turn to their usual after the first one gets shot down, “one victim is too many so Russia was justified in their invasion”.

2,000. They started at 15,000 and got up to 20,000 within a day "according to their sources in Russia".

I only saw the 2,000 claims. I guess I was reading the Putin toadies who hadn’t been emailed the latest talking points.

"A rally is planned today in DC in support of Georgia."

Those huge anti-American Russian rallies in all the major European cities should be starting real soon now!

Interesting. Today the BBC is running a story that says the opposite. Go figure.

Well, here are some links to the atrocities committed by the Russians onto the Georgians. The Georgians have the red and white flags with the five crosses. Warning the pictures, especially towards the end are very graphic. If you have a weak stomach do not go there.

You can’t wage genocide on caucasians, only minorities. They just don’t die in mass numbers. /s

Hmm, according to the description of the photos (in Russian) this site documents Georgian atrocities against South Osetians. The tanks look Russian however it is possible that Georgians are using Soviet era tanks.

FYI, just so you know my biasness upfront. My mother survived the Russian occupation of Berlin. The Russians are nasty. I tend to believe the Georgians before I do the Russians. Just wanted you to know where I am coming from. Your comments are more than welcome though. I will try to reign in my opinions.

Anything is possible. The web site makes certain claims, but it is impossible (at least for me) to validate these claims. I was simply pointing out that the description at the website was in conflict with the description posted on FR.

It would not be unusual for the current Russian leadership to make false claims for propaganda purposes.

> The Russians are nasty.

Well, I would say the Communists are nasty and the current Russian leadership is nasty. The average Russian probably is not much different from any average person - some are nasty and some are kind but most would prefer to be left in peace to mind their own business.

Unfortunately, Putin is intent on building a new Fascist Empire. Or is it the Fourth Rome?

> I tend to believe the Georgians before I do the Russians.

No arguments there.

> Your comments are more than welcome though.

I was simply commenting on the discrepancy between your description and the description at the web site. I believe that information had to be provided. For all I know the description at the website is inaccurate. As I just mentioned on a different post - it would not be beyond the capabilities of the current Russian leadership to provide false information for propaganda purposes.
