Gunmaker to feds: Give me my firearm!
WND ^ | 13 August, 2008 | na

Posted on 08/15/2008 9:03:21 AM PDT by marktwain

A licensed gunmaker who has reported retaliatory attacks on his work by federal agents upset over his testimony on behalf of a man sent to prison for having a broken gun has ordered the government to return one of his projects.

"You have seized company property without any cause or court order to date. The company firmly demands the return of the firearm in question," Len Savage told John Spencer and other officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in a letter, a copy of which was sent to WND and also later posted online at the War on Guns blog run by David Codrea. "Therefore please return the property of the company [the firearm in question] immediately," he wrote.

Savage's dispute with the federal agency stems from a recent project for which he sent a gun part he is developing to the federal government for review. The part is intended to allow a certain type of gun to be used with a different size and less expensive ammunition.

Savage, owner of Historic Arms LLC., said his part would convert the caliber of the guns to operate with ammunition that costs 1 or 2 cents per shell, instead of 25 cents or more. He said such devices are fairly common. But he told WND he was stunned to get a letter from the BATFE stating that not only was his repair part a gun, it was a machine gun.

If gubmint gives someone a title and a paycheck, that someone will do what is necessary to justify the title and paycheck.

Is the ambiguity in this story intentional? It sure leaves the reader trying to figure out what actually happened with this “part” meant to convert a “certain type of gun” to work with a “different kind of ammunition,” and what the gubmint did with “a length of chain,” “plastic wires,” and “duct tape” when they got ahold of it. Why the obfuscation?

IMO Len Savage is asking for it.

In business and especially with the gubmint you do not, I repeat, NOT - "DEMAND" - anything. You 'respectfully request' and use phrases like 'with all due respect'.

In my past as a Construction Project Manager and a Chief Estimator (30+ years combined) I've written more than my fair share of 'strong letters' and if I would have used 'demand' in any, I'd have been out the door in a heartbeat when the owner found out.

BTW, as a holder of a Class 03 C&R License I've had communication with the BATF and they've all been positive. Then again, I was respectful and polite. Len Savage can be right as rain here but he's acting like an ignorant knuckle dragging ass by "demanding".

(again, just my opinion.)

We do not know what communication preceded this “demand”. I believe that in certain legal situations, if you on “request” instead of “demand”, you can be refused.

I suspect that “demand” here has a required legal meaning.

While he is at it, he could also ask Louisiana to return the thousands of Katrina-area confiscated weapons to their rightful, legal owners. Or did I see those at a surplus auction last month?

True, the article lacks some details. However I would think any "demanding" in a legal connotation would come from his attorney to the BATF. If he's doing it himself, not good IMO, 'demanding' just pi__es people off.

You can still 'demand' in a polite, business like way.

While sarcasm towards other freepers (new or not) should be sparingly used, and in spirit of ribbing a friend, “newby” does have a good point. Everywhere you turn, you are told how you must be “respectful” and groveling when you communicate with the government. We are constantly warned that when we write congressmen,,various bureaucrats,,etc etc,, that we must above all, “be respectful”.
With the price of fuel, the growing scam of global warming, the flood of illegals,,I have recently started wondering, exactly *when* are we allowed to sound angry?
I’m not talking violence, or threats,,, im just saying that maybe its time they start to hear how angry people really are becoming. The tone of the subject towards the king doesn’t always convey this. I sincerely hope its not true, but IF* ATF *actually did* suddenly assign the main agent on the original case to investigate the firearms of a witness for the defense,,that’s truly frightening, and maybe actually they DO need to hear some firm “demands” rather than the requests of a subject. We aren’t British yet.

And i know this is just stark raving mad,,,but maybe, just maybe, it’s time for Congressmen, ATF agents, and other G- men to be taught to adopt a respectful tone when dealing with us, the people.
It’s certainly true that insincere sucking-up respectfulness towards them *will* get you further, but newby isnt saying that. If we all listen, “Newby” tells us 2 things,,,he was recently motivated to get involved on OUR side, and that a lot of people are very weary of being respectful to those who won’t show them some mutual respect in return.

Go away newbie.

I dare say "Newbie's" attitude is much more welcome around here than yours.
