U.S. Rep. Henry Brown on Thursday defended a bill that would help future homeowners on the undeveloped southwestern end of Kiawah Island qualify for federally subsidized flood insurance.

Brown, R-S.C., said he introduced the bill last month at the behest of the town of Kiawah Island, and that "I had no idea there was a developer" connected with the legislation.

In this day of constituent's $4.00 gasoline, a South Carolina congressman has come up with a plan to subsidize the wealthy to the tune of $38,000 per year so they can build their million dollar homes on a barrier island. If his constituents don't like it, they can pony up for a trip to Washington, DC to comment at a public meeting on the topic. The congressman claims that he had no idea that a developer was behind the legislation.

“The congressman claims that he had no idea that a developer was behind the legislation.”

Actually he probably had no idea anybody would find out about it.

Out of curiosity, but even given that the land in question is probably marketed at the high end homeowner, aren’t all homeowners by definition wealthy when using the Democrat’s scale?

This guy makes me sick and he is a Republican. We need to watch them all, they soon become aloof and think they can do anything.

A Republican says ''"I had no idea there was a developer" connected with the legislation.""

So tell me again, what IS the difference between a Republican and a Democrat congresscritter today?

True, but it just doesn't make any sense to build a house where a hurricane will eventually take it away. Happened during Hugo, 1989, and it will happen again.

If someone wants to make an unwise decision and is wealthy enough to risk $1,000,000.00, then let them go for it. Just don't ask me and the rest of the taxpayers to subsidize their insurance. Let them pay the free market rate themselves.

The entrenched Republicans are just as bad. They want to get theirs, and that is their #1 priority.

They are willing to go along to get along. An example is when Pelosi closed oil drilling debate in the house and went to recess, only a few Republican congressmen and women stayed to get the spotlight. Reason: they are all in cahoots and did not want to make their democrat friends p.o.ed with them so they could get what they wanted later.

If someone is stupid enough to build a house in an area that is subject to flooding we shouldn’t have to help foot that bill. Its RINOs like this idiot who are destroying the party.

“The congressman claims that he had no idea that a developer was behind the legislation. “

If he isn’t lying (which he is) should be voted out of office for stupidity. Of course developers would be behind something that makes it that much easier for them to sell gigantic houses too close to the water.

I don't see the problem with this. If we subsidize it for basically everyone else who live in beautiful, but weather-challenged areas, then this is only fair.

However, MOST FAIR is to remove this stupid, subsidized insurance that makes the rest of the country pay for the desires of those who laugh at those left in “fly-over country” who actually pay their insurance bills after each hurricane.

In Harry Potter’s world the Republicans would be called Squibs.

I agree. If middle and low income Americans can get subsidized flood insurance, then why not the wealthy? If not, it is like making the wealthy pay at a higher tax rate, or not allowing them to receive Social Security.

I assume the wealthy homeowners would pay a higher premium because their homes are worth more. If that is the case, then it is fair.

Agreed. This is so incredibly stupid when I think of the twentysomethings trying to earn a living and feed their children. This congressman is basically stealing from them, forcing them to subsidize his rich developer budies.

This makes me so mad at RINO republicans who are only in it for personal gain. I cannot see it any other way, except to hope some democrat or whomever unseats this traitor.

Kiawah Island is basically a private island. I also remember that when it was first being developed the scoop was, it was being done so with Saudi money.

Not a 'weather challenged area', but the Atlantic Ocean. Makes no sense to build there.
