Nigeria cedes Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon (Oil, gas)

CALABAR, Nigeria (AFP) - Nigeria on Thursday handed over the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon to end a 15-year dispute over the territory believed to be rich in oil and gas.

After a drawn-out legal battle, the ICJ ruled in October 2002 that the peninsula should be given to Cameroon. It based its decision largely on a 1913 treaty between former colonial powers Britain and Germany.

Nigeria has also reported a 12 percent increase in oil reserves to 33.6 billion barrels.

The 419 scams are small potatoes compared to the Social Security scam the US government runs on its citizens.
