I really hate to say this but frankly the Russians WON a huge tactical victory here. Before 8/8/08 the Russians were not in control of a vital land route to the Middle East. With the signing of this so called truce they now have legitimate reason to station troops at the end that is on Georgian territory. By feigning an assault of the whole of Georgia the Russians showed their mastery of more than chess by choosing a year in which a President was a lame duck and coincidentally had the Olympics as a distraction. The West caved at the potential threat and accepted what would otherwise have been unacceptable. Beware Freedom loving peoples of the Ukraine, Putin smells fear and blood in the uncertainty of the leaders of the west. While we are only now planning our strategy do deal with this new reality the Russians have been planning for some 10 years time. I think I will install a wood burning stove this year...

great idea on the wood burning stove!

the West caved and gave Russia the green light and turned Georgia over to Russia when the Europeans waffled on inclusion of Georgia and Ukraine in Nato.

congratulations Sarkozy and Merkel and the Belgians! Keep licking russia’s butt, your day will come...be scaired, be very very scaried.

And why we keep bailing out the Euro weenies when they hate us and insult us and humilliate us even at the UN>

And Obama wants me to learn French?

Tactical. But it will fade to the strategic victory a NATO entry of former Soviet states and the Missile Defense shield will be. We have to pull it off and not weasel down (further one has to say).

So the South Ossetians will now become part of Russia. How long until the South Ossetians form a movement to secede from Russia or the Georgians inside South Ossetia revolt.

Trust me, the Russians and their Osset minions will take care that there won’t be any Georgians left in Ossetia.

So the South Ossetians will be trading Georgians for resettled Russians?

So there is absolutely no punishment at all for the destruction of this country. The US taxpayers are going to pay to rebuild it and Russia gets to do exactly what it was doing before.

Unbelievable.

Trading? The cutthroats will “cleanse” Ossetia from any Georgian who hasn’t escaped yet.

Time will tell on that one, but I don't think he is through. He is of the mind that he can take it all, it doesn't matter to him what we think we simply must expect the incomprehensible from him. It was madness for Hitler to engage the Allied forces of France and Great Briton but he gambled and nearly won. You can expect the same from Putin, he is not simply having a tantrum regarding NATO and the Russian sphere of influence. I know I sound a bit over the top, but then so did Sir Winston Churchill throughout much of the 1930’s.

“If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” Winston Churchill

“Never give in—never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” Winston Churchill
