Conservatives Warn McCain: Don't Pick Pro-Choice VP

Top conservative activist and leader of the Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafly — a legendary militant pro-lifer — reacted to John McCain's remark that former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge's pro-choice position would not rule him out as a vice presidential running mate by telling Newsmax, "I think [McCain] would be making a mistake."

Schlafly was not alone in warning McCain against picking Ridge or any other pro-choice advocate as his running mate. Other top conservative leaders chimed in, showing that McCain, already getting only grudging support from the GOP’s right wing, might drive conservatives to desert his cause and torpedo his chances of winning in November.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, “I think McCain has to have a running mate that clearly connects with social conservatives in the party. That is where he is lacking. So if he picks a pro-choice running mate, I don't see how he can win this race."

When asked if social and religious conservatives would walk away from Sen. McCain if he chooses Ridge or some other pro-choice running mate, Perkins explained, "I'm not going to say people will stay home, but there is a core of voters whose level of enthusiasm influences people further from the core. So if McCain picks a pro-choice running mate, the strength of turnout on election day is not going to be there for him."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum told LancasterOnline.com that McCain cannot anger conservatives, as choosing a pro-choice running mate would do.

“Obama’s got to lose,” Santorum said. “It doesn’t matter. I’m a believer that John McCain can’t win the race, but that Obama has to lose it. This is not a knock on McCain. I don’t know of any Republican candidate who can overcome the Democrats in this environment without the Democrat disqualifying himself.

This is getting ridiculous. Most people are not pro-life. Choosing a pro-life candidate may lose the middle.

I really wish they would just ban forever partial-birth abortion and stop making every election about abortion.

McCain - pick whoever will get you elected. Don’t let the abortion issue cost you the election and allow the government to steal my wealth.

Ditto, here.

There are three reasons why I simply could not vote for McCain in November, no matter how horrible Obama is, if he picks someone like Ridge or Lieberman as his VP.

1. McCain is a lousy, marginal candidate anyway, who threatens to destroy the party.

2. It would demonstrate once more that McCain doesn’t give a damn about his base or about such basic conservative principles as the right to life.

3. It would demonstrate that the party RINOs are firmly in charge again, riding high and trampling on the base. Because whoever is picked as VP will likely be their next presidential choice, since McCain is a sick old man, unlikely to serve more than a term in office.

If we elect McCain, we need some assurance that the party will have a future. Otherwise, it would be better to stay home. And, whatever we decide to do, certainly many millions will predictably think that way and stay home.

I WILL NOT VOTE FOR A PRO-ABORT LIKE TOM RIDGE. NEVER.

Most people are not pro-life

Actually, a majority ARE pro-life. Why do you think the Democrat politicians are even now planning how to disguise their pro-abort intentions at the Denver convention. They need to speak out of one side of their mouths to the dedicated leftist moonbats, and out of the other side of their mouths to ordinary people in the middle.

Bush won two elections as a pro-life candidate. And the blue dog Democrats only won in 2006 by pretending to be conservative on this issue. Casey, for instance.

She speaks like one...

And can still rally the conservative troops...

I heard her at the Eagle Forum convention in Nashville last October

She’s as strong as she ever was...

One of the big issues here for Conservatives is that, with many of their number having come out and very vocally said that they’ll NEVER vote for McCain under any circumstances, they’re effectively marginalised out of having credible political weight to throw behind the matter.

If these people are going to stay home and sit on their hands one election day anyways, where’s the political incentive for McCain to do anything other than write them off and attempt to strike out for the center?

Why is News max spreading this crap?

McCain isnt going to pick Ridge or Lieberman.

This is just crap designed to rattle the base since McCain has been performing VERY well for weeks now.

McCain continues to convince me that he suffers from some sort of personality disorder, something that spurs him to take contrarian positions simply to get attention, or to shock others. I think most of his “maverick” behavior is just another form of showing off and drawing attention to himself.

The phrase, “temperamentally unsuited to be president” was of often heard before he became the putative nominee, and it still fits. Being the nominee is not just another platform for McCain to use to show his ass, but is the top position in a political party that tens of millions have invested time, money and interest in over many years.

McCain needs to grow up ASAP and pick a VP and help craft a platform that represents what the party has stood for years, and stop playing the “maverick” game.

Standing firm on a passionate issue is not akin to calls of violence and disruption.

Is it impossible for McCain to find a VP who is also strong on those things, and anti-abort?
