I know if he does want to take back the old Union he’ll have a nasty fight on his hands. But alas, it will be less difficult then it should be.

My next question would be: What do the Russian people think about all this? Our military takes out a brutal dictator that only Russia, China, France and Germany like and there’s 100,000 Americans in the streets saying Bush is a terrorist and we’re imperialists.

I have another question. Do you think all the Yankee, Duke, and University of Oklahoma fans are routing for Russia?

“...But this may just show the difference between (generally) Chechyn Muslism...and generally Chrisian Georgians. One loves death more the life...
and the other loves life (even oppressed by “The Bear”) more than death...”

Or - just maybe - the ferocity and thirst for liberty has been so bred out of the Georgians by decades of socialist oppression, psychological mind games, neighborhood snitches, liberal garbage, and midnight knocks on the front door, that they don’t remember how to fight...

I’ve been thinking about this - these people (in the Republics) have been under communist domination since the early twentieth century; most of the people who remembered what life was like before the Communists are dead - either naturally or eliminated as enemies of the State back in the day. Those that dared stand up to the allmighty State were immediately made examples of and whisked off to the gulag, to the back of the barn for a bullet in the head, their families executed, etc., The rest just lived through it, trying not to get noticed, and went along with the program.

Don’t think for a minute that those types of actions don’t leave lasting Pavlovian psychological damage on those witnessing it. Think of 4-am Flashbangs, police blockades, and “dynamic entries” and the effect THAT has on local civilians...and then the massive barrage of lapdog media propaganda that follows to justify the Gestapo/NKVD/KGB tactics...They LIVED through all that.

The current people have nothing to compare to - their history was probably wiped clean, their heritage was wiped clean, their very national identity and langauge was suppressed for the “greater glory of the Soviet”.

They’ve probably forgotten how to be savages, how to protect liberty once won...(sort of like what the liberal socialists in this country are trying to do to our children).

And did they really WIN their liberty to begin with??? Did they fight tooth and nail for it, or did the Russians just simply - pull out - and fade away north in the 90s, leaving the daily admin duties to the Georgian apparatchniks??? One day you’re under Soviet domination, the next - “Hey you’re free...By the way, where’s the tax money you owe us now?”

Meet the New boss....same as the Old Boss...

Initially, I had hoped that a massed uprising of civilians armed with former Soviet-bloc weapons would arise (and that may happen yet), but it doesn’t appear likely. More likely, all the AK47s that never made it back to Mother Russia were confiscated immediately by the Georgian government...can’t have the Sheep armed and learning how to use guns, now can we?

Very depressing...my heart goes out to those folks. it’s just another example of the vicious destruction and horrible aftereffects of that ugly failed socialist ideology.

The sooner Socialism/communism and those who support and foster it wind up on the sh*t heap of failed ideologies, the better off the world will be.

I think Julien has a point. Russia got tired of the expansionism of democracy led by the US. I think the US had hoped Russia would become more democratic itself and eventually go the way of Poland and the Baltic states developing their resources and joining the world as a democracy, but the autocratic side to them is too strong and they are reverting back to communism. I suspect their goal is to control the bulk of the worlds energy reserves and hold the european nations hostage until they submit or create havoc in their economies to create ‘government regime change’ (ex: they withheld their natural gas last winter to blackmail a couple of nations). They’ve already become aggressive in their lack of respect for territorial rights of several nations including the US (their bomber fly overs, planting their flag on the ocean floor at the artic region, etc). They’ve been testing the world over the last few years and have attempted to install their own regimes in surrounding countries by tampering with elections as in the Ukraine (poisoning Yushchenko). They are aligning themselves with muslim countries (building nuclear reactors for Iran and sitting in the negotiations with Hamas against Israel for Gaza, etc). Now that Mushareff is resigning in Pakistan there is more potential for instability in the region. It’s going to get interesting.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see China make a move to retake Taiwan after the Olympics, while the world is distracted with Russia.

She also accuses the Norwegian red-green government coalition of
failing to nurse relations with the USA.

She should heed the advice that Winston Churchill gave to the leaders
of the UK in his last session before leaving government:

In so many words, Churchill said:
“Stick with the United States of America.”

Of course, Churchill is regarded as a retrograde chauvanist (sp?),
so the Norweigians will most likely ignore his wise counsel.

I might not agree 100% with Tony Blair...but I do thank Providence
that he heeded this advice after 9-11.

It’s no coincidence that the Bear made his move during the Olympics...just look at the medal count...if you add up all the former Soviet counties’ gold, siver and bronze medals, they kick the livin’ cr@p out of the US and China....

Wistful shades of glory past, and it sticks in their craw.

I’m out of my league there. (No pun intended.) I can’t say for sure—what do you think?

Well, I’m just kind of shooting from the hip/thinking out loud half the time. I’m glad my opinion adds to the mix of opinions here. I like to think I’m being impartial, or more likely taking the side of the underdog, and here now that would be the Rooskiis, as they couldn’t take a concerted attack from the West for long. I think both sides are inconsistent (is that the word I use when both are really huge hypocrites all the time?)

Yes, I see your point. That would really ratchet up things now, wouldn’t it? I hope it doesn’t happen, but I’d put money on China making a move, even soon.

Russians of all stripes are HUGELY NATIONALISTIC! I mean, I know people whose family was persecuted and kicked around by the Commie system for 70 years, but you wouldn’t know it by how the Russian’s reflex to defend its Mother Russia kicks into gear when one word is said by anyone, anyone to criticize her in any way. It’s scary to me how single-minded they are in this regard; i.e., I wouldn’t want to mess with ‘em.
Remember: Every time an American points out something like you do (re: removing brutal dicatator), he/she will pounce on you like a hungry cat re: our coddling of dictators back to the founding of the country, so, if you’re going to get in a tit-for-tat argument/debate with a Rooskii, you better have done your homework to defend against the arguments that we have and are supporting arguably similar ilk to the nasty dictator our Army removed in 2003.
