Climate of 2008 July in Historical Perspective (NOAA makes up numbers again)
NOAA ^ | 8/18/08 | NOAA

Posted on 08/18/2008 8:21:31 AM PDT by qam1

Major Highlights
NOAA: U.S. Temperature Above Normal in July,
Fifth Warmest July on Record for Globe

July 2008 was the 30th warmest July for the contiguous United States, based on records dating back to 1895, according to an analysis by NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. The average July temperature, 74.9°F, was 0.7 degrees above the 20th century mean, based on preliminary data.

The combined average global land and ocean surface temperature for July 2008 tied with 2001 and 2003 as the fifth warmest July since worldwide records began in 1880, according to an analysis by NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

Also, the seven months from January to July 2008 ranked as the ninth warmest seven-month period for combined average global land and ocean surface temperature.

U.S. Temperature Highlights
July temperatures were generally higher than average across the West and Northeast and below average in the Midwest.

Five states (Conn., Mass., N.J., R.I. and Utah) were much warmer than average. Rhode Island had its sixth warmest July, and Massachusetts and Utah both had their eighth warmest July, based on statewide data going back to 1895. Six states (Ill., Ind., Ky., Mo., N.M. and W.Va.) were cooler than average.

Based on NOAA's Residential Energy Demand Temperature Index, contiguous U.S. temperature-related energy demand was approximately three percent above average in July.

Pay more in taxes so government can pretend to control the weather. This is the beginning of the pretend. Most would call it lies, but then most are too polite.

Did you see Denver is breaking all time records for cold this summer? It's snowing already in Colorado and Idaho ... Going to be a bad winter, time to get prepared, for the hoaxers as well.

WTF are these people talking about?

I live in the Northeast, and it has NOT BEEN WARMER THAN USUAL, IN FACT IT HAS BEEN MUCH COOLER THAN USUAL!!!!

Downright chilly in fact. Check the records for July and now the first half of August. How many days over 90 degrees have there been? Not many. We’ve had a Northwest wind for the last three weeks and it has been decidedly cooler than normal.

NOAA is now full of Algore acolytes and should be ignored.

The map is not accurate for S. Arizona.... the NOAA stated that July was below average for Tucson in July.

As nicely shown in this chart.

It is clearly cooler.

NOAA has been guilty of a lot of shenanigans, but...

In all fairness, NOAA uses a different baseline than RSS and UAH. RSS and UAH use 1978 (IIRC) to the present, while NOAA uses many, many more years. Thus, RSS and UAH’s baseline is much more affected by the warm 1990s and the first few years of this decade, than NOAA is, so their baseline is higher. This measurement is how many degrees above the baseline the current readings are. So, since the NOAA baseline is lower, the distance above the baseline of the current readings will be much higher.

What’s interesting is that the RSS (government) readings are much higher than UAH (academic) readings, even though they use the same raw data, IIRC.

Been a very cool July on the Mississippi Coast. Only a couple days at 95 or so. Most temps have been in the mid to high 80s, a few degrees below average.

What they are doing is averaging the temps in huge geographical area that disguises actual readings for particular areas.

(very unscientific) For instance, the Austin, TX area has been well above average for several months after having a cooler than average early spring.

So there were 29 years out of the last 100 in which July was warmer than July 2008. If this is such a catastrophe how did we survive the other 29 years? Thank God we’re alive, that was a close one.

I don’t think that a direct comparison of surface station temperature anomalies to atmospheric temperature anomalies should be expected to be exactly similar.

We haven’t hit 90° in Milwaukee, and I read head lines that Anchorage hasn’t hit 65° all summer. I see posts on other boards that Australia has had a cool winter, there’s a long list. I think we are being lied to.
And a report from New York City just now that it has been warmer than usual.
