I’m sort of ashamed to admit it, but I don’t understand how ROTC works. How does one join ? Would you care to enlighten me ?

Unfortunately my daughter could give you a better answer. Start working the problem in your junior year of high school. Contact the recruiter of the branch of service of your choice and ask who the ROTC coordinator for your area is and how to get in touch.

You'll need good grades, extracurriculars, health, be fit, and have to write a couple of essays. There'll be at least one interview.
